what is the point of a 22 magnum? a 22lr can kill stuff within 70 yards and if you want to go farther then 100, 17s are perfect. im not trying to hate on the gun but could someone please educate me why this gun is good?

When I was helping out a friend of mine at his butcher shop I'd go out and kill the beef so to speak with a .22 mag I loved the caliber and the one shot kill , it isn't as loud as the .223 when you have to kill second steer or bull they don't get as worked up which can and does make a difference on quality of the finished product so to speak .

The 40 gr solid bullet works on everything up to a old range bull with built up callous on its head then I'd use a .6 mm

You're friend along the snare line .

Because it came in an age of underpowered 22 lr. and before .17 hmr's and now its thought of as "old" kinda like the 30-30 243 308 and so on

lots of niche uses where other things would be too powerful for the desired effect
and 22lr is just a little too weak.

whats the point of any of the .22 variants? its usually to add speed to be more effective at longer ranges. Hunting purposes, keeping the bullet size down minimizes meat loss and for fur hunters, reduces the amount of sewing needed. Guns are tools and you gotta pick the right tool for the job. Some tools have more versatility than others. I wont carrry my AR15 on the trapline, well not as a dispatch gun anyway but as a hey theres a coyote over there gun. Could take my 17hmr as it can be used for both to a degree. Normally just take the lil badger 22 out as its a lot lighter and hey theres a coyote thing doesnt happen very often around here(in fact hasnt happened yet)

I have 5 22 mags. One of my favorite little rounds when shooting 40 grain FMJ. I feel safer, or at least like ill have a chance if a bear showed when carrying the 22mag while walking for rabbits.

I have the pistol with a burris reflex sight - recommended by keltec. It bas been back to keltec four times. They can not get it to reliably cycle. I really like the gun. Great trigger, light, accurate. Accurate to hit a hog at 100 yards off a rest. I would not use it as a self defense gun - but for a trapping companion, a mis fire here and there is not a big deal

Good to know , I have only shot 1 clip through it with no issues but I will make note . I carry it on my hip while bow hunting . So light I don't even notice it . I like the 30 rnds ifn a wolf or cougar gets up a bit too close , but not if it jams ... shocked

sounds like Keltec in a nut shell

Really cool innovative Idea

that always seems to fall short of what you actually want it to be.

You do know the 22mag is the most recommended round for a woman to carry right?

I've had a number of them. A Browning pump. A Bruno semi auto. A 9422m. A couple of bolt guns. And currently a Volquartsen semi auto switch barrel. None of them shot well enough to call very accurate. Can't really fault the guns as there is no such thing as match ammo. All of them were shot extensively with all available ammo and none ever shot a decent group that was repeatable.

For me, the improved accuracy and flatter trajectory of the 17 HMR has ruined me for my beloved 22 mags I have owned.
I have killed a bunch of stuff with my 22 Mag.
I have missed far fewer with my 17 HMR.
Shot placement on larger animals is crucial for both rounds. I find it easier to place a 17 HMR round where I want it.
I bought my first 22 mag to have an extended range over what I could get out of a 22 LR. Where I live, you can't use a centerfire rifle in many counties. So 22 mag fit my bill nicely back then. Now, 17 HMR fits that bill nicelier.

Realistically that is good enough, but I've shot some absolute tackdriver 22 mags and for that kind of price I expected better. Very comfortable gun, and very light, like I said, functions flawlessly, just not happy with the accuracy. And the fact for that kind of money you can't get it with iron sights, I think all guns should come with iron sights,

it is not uncommon at all for a blow back design to give up some accuracy , moving parts , the bolt has started moving early in the firing of the round.

1.5 isn't bad at all and given that is pushing effective range it will work.

I do like Irons as an option on everything but I get why they don't the portion of the population that can use them effectively is small and the factory offerings are typically not good any way.
it adds machine time which is more cost.

Yeah, but my dad has one of the Ruger 10/22 mags and I shot it quite a bit before I bought my Magnum Research. Bone stock with a thin barrel and not nearly as nice of a trigger, it will shoot half the size groups my Magnum Research will. I was expecting for twice the money (I realize that now a used Ruger will cost more than the Magnum Research, but when you could buy them new you could get them for 400, price tripled as soon as they discontinued them) I should get at least as good of accuracy.

Because the 22 mag performs much better in the real world on game than its ballistics would make you believe. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anything in North America with one. I am unaware of any bullets made for the 17 that are designed for anything other than small varmints.

Plus I own two pistols and a rifle that are revolvers and switchable cylinders, so you can just flop cylinders and shoot 22 lr (or longs, shorts, CB caps, etc.) or switch to the Magnum cylinder if you want some more power. I will say that 22 mag is an ear breaker in a pistol.
