If they heard what I heard they'd be baffled by it to but they wouldn't be brave enough to post the question as to.what it might be for fear someone would think they're nuts.
...
Im a conservative American who has racked their brain to put an explanation to the noise I heard and have been unsuccessful.
You're right, it didn't even dawn on me to be afraid to ask the question because I didn't realize so many adults in these places were still so childish. It literally is like being in a room full of 7 year olds, so now I can see why they would be afraid. No "unknown" ever occurred to me. I had been leaning toward a moose the whole time, but you don't have moose by you, so...? I was just hoping for an explanation just like the mystery of the grouse sound after I heard it for the first time, but no can do...

One plausible explanation for Bigfoot sightings is that they are biologists from an extraterrestrial race and are here studying Earth's ecosystems. They are undoubtedly bound by the universal intergalactic law of nonintervention with per-intergalactic space travel civilizations and are forbidden from carrying advanced technology or interfering in any way.
The knocking noises could be experiments performed by the biologists to observe how the dominant specie on this planet reacts to various stimuli.
Eh...wot?

Hi, everyone, first post here. This is to hopefully give some support to what cathryn and Mainewoods have posted about their experiences with their knock sounds. I carefully read all of the details within each telling and saw that a lot of the suggested sources of these sounds don't fit the descriptions of carolyn's and Mainewoods' locations or relatively isolated location conditions. I'm going to post a recording of what I think is what they've heard. There are two prime differences between what they said and my own experience. One is that both of their occurrences happened in the daytime where mine occurred primarily between 9:25pm and 9:50pm. There's more to relate concerning the backstory of that but for now it can wait. The second difference is that they were going about doing normal things whereas I had intentionally set up a recorder to run all night that, with luck, might acquire such evidence. All comments are welcome. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/vmsz...huio0btt3e0dqzk&st=pjimoknm&dl=0

All I can say is: People come on here asking a question that can't be answered and accuse the rest of us to be stupid for not knowing what they expect us of to say.

Rest assured, T-Rex, I'm not one of 'em. All that can really be done realistically is through a process of elimination. It would seem that options are fewer for night time than day, however. And since woodpeckers are not nocturnal it would reasonably cut down the choices. The recording I got was just last May 31st. Deer and moose have all shed their antlers easily by then which cuts down options even further. I can't tell you what made the knock-like sounds because I don't KNOW what made them. I can tell you it was lakeside about 30 miles up a gravel logging road in a remote location with no people around for miles. I was camping solo which I prefer to do.
I have no answers either and claim none, Just wanted to see if the phenomenon was, or similar to, what cathryn and Mainwoods had experienced. Since some folks mentioned that there was no record of the sounds they witnessed I thought it might be beneficial to share what my recorder picked up that night.

That it is, trapdog1. I have been all over the web for several years trying to get an answer. Hunting forums, camping forums, biking forums, and even a hammock forum. Those all came up when doing a search for knock sounds in the forest at night. Even a state regional biologist said he wasn't familiar with the phenomenon. So, turkey putts, beaver tail slaps, pine cones dropping on dead pine branches, temp fluctuation in trees have all been suggested from various sources on the web but none of it sounds like the recording. So...IDK. But agreed, definitely interesting.
