My nephew caught a 19” Cutthroat trout. When he opened it up, it had 3 mice in its stomach. One was partially digested and the other two were completely intact. Anybody else come across something like this?

Mouse imitation fly patterns are the primary method of taking big river trout here in the summer at night after the big hex hatches are over. Biggest brown and brookie I've ever caught came from mouse skated on the surface in the dark.

Yes, in both native Cutthroat and stocked Brook trout. I have had success with mouse patterns on the Cutties, they are almost always ready to attack when opportunity presents itself.

Here its most common where river flows thru open areas and the grass is tall. Mice run up into the grass tops and end up in the water. Along log jams can be pretty mousey too. Most of the water here is log jam after log jam. I didnt observe that type of situation when I fished in Oregon and Washington. Guessing spring runoff off mountains takes care of that out there.

A lot of the native brook trout streams in the mountains of north central Pa have some brown trout in them. They would live in the deep pools, and stay under the banks. Many would only feed at night. I recall my Grandfather telling me about catching mice from a mouse nest and using them live as bait at night. Hook them and let them swim in the big pools. It was his favorite way to catch those old brownies.

Interesting thread. A trout fisherman of mine said he uses sculpins for large trout.
He mentioned mice one time but i thought he was kidding.

Not mice so much as shrews in interior Alaska. Here's a rainbow from the Nowitna with at least 19 shrews in stomach.

Famous fly fisherman around state college pa., back in 70's I believe held state record brown trout. He would fish for big trout at night. I believe he used mouse and waking patterns. His big fish locations and I think he only fished at night.

I don't remember the name, Brooks or Humphrey,?

He actually taught fly fishing at Penn State at the time.

Anything that is swimming on the surface, is food to them.

As long as they can fit in their mouth!

Those look like water shrews to me. Had one come up through an ice hole in front of a beaver feed bed in Ontario. Little gaffer would dig right through the slush, hop up on the ice completely dry, then burrow back down through the slush. It did it several times. We looked it up later and found they hunt larvae and other small critters under water, apparently year round.

Garder snakes also. I have even trapped underwater those shrews (that can be confused with mice) in my conibears. So they are available to the trout also. We used super glue to attach them to the hook, #2 circle hook. Let them take it and wait a second or two, slowly pull back and the fight is on. Really those big trout roll more than fight. YEARS ago my best year was18 twenty inchers, that is pretty good for the middle of Pa. But I cheated and swam the creeks looking for them, then went back and fished at night........jk maybe 25 years ago or more
