I've spent a good portion of my life in the woods. I can assure you cwd is not prevalent on the west coast, but within the next ten years it will be. This is terrible news. I did not intend for this to turn into a conspiracy theory thread. I really get irritated with people who choose to believe such foolishness.
Doesn't matter if you've been in the woods. So have all of us. Noone sees sick deer walking around goofy. Noone knows till the deer are tested.
2bit you are spot on. There are a few people on here that will dive into the conspiracy theory rabbit hole every time a subject comes up that they don’t know what they don’t know. It’s a classic example of the Dunning – Krueger effect. I.e. the government is trying to ban lead shot and lead bullets so they can ban hunting!

Now back to the matter at hand I spent over two decades less than 50 miles from the epicenter of the CWD outbreak in Wyoming, Seville Canyon. Seville Canyon is a wildlife research center. The woman biologist that has done more research on CWD than any other scientist, studying the disease was based out of the Wyoming game and fish laboratory in Laramie Wyoming. I have spoken with members of her research team while having deer and elk heads being sampled for testing. those conversations are much to lengthy to relate here. I watched year after year as the disease spread from one hunting unit to the next. this was several years before the disease showed up in Wisconsin. it is true that the spongiform prions causing CWD are similar two the prions found in scabies disease of sheep. They are also similar to the prions found in mad cow disease. They are similar to the prions found in Jacobson Crutchfield disease in humans, but each one is slightly different from the other.
As two the comments about none have seen deer standing around goofy. This is not correct. I personally have stood within 15 feet of mule deer standing there broad daylight, drooling from their nose and mouth. and totally unaware of my presence, even though there was nothing between them and me but thin air. I’m reasonably certain that this disease will spread amongst deer elk and possibly even moose from coast to Coast and border to border. it has nothing to do with banning hunting and everything to do with human greed. Mad cow disease was traced back to animal byproducts being fed to dairy’ cattle in England to increase profits CWD was spread to the Great Lakes states through Whitetail farming, again follow the money.
Will they ever find a cure for this disease I doubt it very seriously prions are not living things like bacteria or viruses. They are incomplete proteins, and the only certain means of destroying them is by very high temperatures in other words incineration.
