The fruit goes fast once it ripens. If you have fruit.2 weeks your doing good..

Once they ripen you can't really hold.em.cause if you put them in the fridge they turn black like bananas.

There almost like a Tropical.fruit

Most of the trees are big around as your arm but where we get these some.trees are bigger than your thigh

Various wildlife eats them alot.

They grow where there are alot of black walnut trees.

Our riverbanks here in places are covered up with them.

That's interesting because I've heard and/or read somewhere that black walnut releases something into the soil and it limits a number of other species from growing directly around them.

Here's a fun walnut factoid that many people probably don't know. We mostly eat English walnuts that are grown in the Central Valley of California. However, there is a native fungus or whatever that will kill English walnut roots so all the English walnuts we eat have been spliced onto black walnut root stock. You drive around the Central Valley and you can see the bark color difference and sometime the spliced trunk is narrower than the black walnut base. They also have black walnut nurseries so they can provided the root stock for new English walnuts people want to plant. I'll try to grab some photos of this splicing from work tomorrow...

If you get some they need to be put in the ground now
.in the fall because they have to feeeze(striate) before they'll germinate...like ginseng seeds.

Or you can put em.in the freezer and plant em.in the spring but I feel they do better planted in the fall

I started noticing last fall that the pawpaw trees were literally surrounding black walnut trees and looked it up and the internet said that the grow hand in hand.

Hackberry is not accurate. I have a hackberry and black walnut tree at the most 20 feet from each other. Both are healthy.

I promised Cathryn some pictures of English walnuts growing from black walnut root stock because of a fungus or something in the soils of the California Central Valley that kills English walnut root stalk. These are from a work field trip in 2005. The second photo shows the splicing the best. The first photo is of a black walnut "nursery" where the trees are grown to be used for root stock of he English walnuts, notice the lack of uniformity of the young trees.

Garlic doesnt do well near a black walnut tree.I do have a silver maple growing within 40' of a black walnut and it is fine.

Pawpaw seeds have a laxative effect. They are like natural Ex-Lax. I knew a guy who chopped pawpaw seeds up and mixed them with nuts, on a cake to get back at a co-worker who stole food from the refrigerator at work. The thief crapped his pants.
