Which is better for occasionally off road but mainly pavement? Pros or cons. What's the difference in regular truck tires vs Light truck tires.
Thanks for your help.

Literally was just studying this the past few days and ordered a set of tires online for the first time..

E is the equivalent of 10 ply. Ç is 6...

So I went E

E range will reduce punctures and flats and allow you to carry more weight

I take my trucks across hay fields, timber lands, crop stubble and lots of gravel roads but most my miles are also blacktop. I will always spend the extra and get E range. It is a truck - treat it like a truck

I've always run Load Range E tires on my trucks and trailers. But most of my trucks have been 3/4 ton and my trailers 8,000-10,000 lb. capacities.

When I had my little Dodge Ram 50 it either had Load Range B or C LT tires or possibly even P-metric. That truck saw more off road than on and never had an issue with tires.

Eh...wot?

E rated is overkill for a half ton or mini truck. If you want the extra protection no harm in e rated, but they're heavy, so fuel milage will suffer. E rated can carry more weight but that doesn't mean your truck can.

Wow. Lots of good info. I read this thread to help me decide too. I did a search and learned about load range and load index number too. Lots to learn.

When I was working full time as a logging contractor and then as Timber Investment Management Organization Consultant Forester, driving hundreds of miles per year on logging roads, E rated 10 Ply tires were a must. But they will lower your fuel mileage.

Buy E rated tires if you use your truck like a truck !

On my F350 company truck that gets abused I run Mastercraft courser CXT. They hold up extremely well. I run them on my F250 as well, both E range.

Like already mentioned, for primarily road driving and no heavy hauling, E rated tires are a waste of money and fuel.

FYI. Tire Discounters price match so find any ad on the internet for the tire you want and get that price matched at Tire Discounters. Tire Discounters isn't the same as Discount Tire.

And to further confuse matters.

There's P for passenger cars, LT for light truck and a few manufacturers label SL for standard load and XL for extra load. Technically there's a B and D rating but I can't recall seeing it.

And all of this rating is manufacturer applied, there are no third party or govt agents going around testing tires. Just the DOT chart of specifications, it's up to the manufacturer to determine if their product meets the label specs.

Tread depth is something to consider also and it varies greatly from tire to tire. I bought Cooper Discoverer from Walmart with intentions of getting passenger tires but they put on LT. Deeper tread but heavier tires which will cost me 2 mpg but will last longer.

Mini truck C is all you need unless the roads you drive require it

1/2 ton same + I put e rated on mine cuz I'd max it out regularly

3/4 & 1 ton e rated mandatory

450's & 550's require d rated..... * Correction. F12

And so on

I'm running these on 2 different trucks. I'll buy them again.
