Well going to the Mayo was the right decision to get this surgery moving faster. I was originally told it would take 4 weeks to get and have a consultation and then surgery scheduled. Since I went right to the emergency room at the Mayo my surgery is tomorrow morning just 10 days after going to the emergency room. I wish I would have done this 5 months ago when my local providers could not figure the problem out.

Thank you to everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers. I had surgery last Friday, September 6th down at the Mayo Clinic. The doctors removed a tumor from my spinal column that was the size of a large grape. They had some complications as the hope was the tumor would just release off of the spinal cord. However it had attached itself but the surgeons had a game plan going in if that happened. It just took a couple extra hours. They ended up removing some of my bone from my T10 & 11 which is permanently gone. That kind of surgery is call a laminectomy. Unbelievable what they can do with very low risk of complications. When I came to Friday night I was amazed how I felt. I had pain that I can only explain as enjoyable compared to what I had been dealing with for months. Saturday was a tougher day but I just slept a lot. I was released already on Sunday to enjoy a 5 hour drive home. It felt so good to get in my own bed. It is Tuesday now and I am doing awesome. I actually went into work today for a couple hours. Sit in on a meeting and then go around and visit people. I still have issues sitting in a chair without pain but the rest of the time I am almost pain free. I plan to start back working next week 2-3 hour days and can join meeting with my at home setup. I do still have numbness in my legs especially the left one. So I am going at it slow to start because my legs get weak fast. Doctors said I could deal with this numbness for months because the tumor being attached to the cord. I wanted to come back on here and post for this reason. I went from dealing with a doctor I was comfortable with but with a high risk of paralysis to changing providers, fast tracking the surgery with less then a 1% chance of paralysis. I had signs telling me to switch it up but I ignored them way to long. Ultimately why I switched was the doctor with the first provider “no longer did surgeries for Sanford”. I don’t know what else to say other then someone was looking out for me and may have taken a doctor losing his job for me to pick up on it. I look forward to putting this 10 month long issue behind me and looking into the future. A big shout out to all the staff at the Mayo as they are all top notch.
Thank you everyone
Eric Maijala

Eric, first of all, you did the right thing going to Mayo. They are the best.
We had a fellow helping us at the food shelf for many years until he moved out of our area. He had a spinal tumor. Sounds like yours. It wasn't cancerous. Mayo removed it and did a fusion. This was about 15 years ago. It worked miracles for him. Since it was that long ago, I'm sure they are even better equipped to handle this type of illness with even better technology today. Praying for your recovery to go as well as my friend's did.

You are in my prayers.
I look at the insurance and Dr. snafu as a blessing. Seems to me you are in better hands now.
