Looks like this scope. No rings. Only sets the taxpayers back $3000.

Stock high on the shoulder so he don't break that big ole beak from the recoil.
Hand on the shoulder is too gay, but then, it is the Navy...

hand on the shoulder is what you do when you are ROing some one who has a run away gun
in most competitive shooting it can also be a signal to stop if they can't hear the verbal.
it is the only time you touch a shooter when acting as RO

it may not be what is going on here but I suspect he flipped the selector switch to 180* and that guy behind him was making sure he wasn't going to eat the muzzle.

I was never Navy I don't know what their protocols are or how they operate

my suspicion is someone was on a conditional contract like they have a pre-existing medical condition so the Navy took them on but can let them go any time when they stop needing that person to do the job they were doing , they were told they were setting up the captain for a photo op , and they were tired of being on that ship

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Fun to speculate, but picture needs context. I can't imagine any legit reason why the captain of a navy destroyer would touch.....let alone be firing.....any such weapon in regular course of business. I can imagine someone taking a picture of a guy clowning around.

There's every reason a commander should be familiar with all pieces of equipment under his command. Will he ever have need to man a weapon himself? Only if he's the last man standing but he needs to know what can and cannot expect of the marines that will be using them.

One of the best officers I ever served under was my battalion commander LTC Gatlin 82 Engr. He made it a point to get stick time on every piece of equipment in the entire battalion and not just in the motor pool. The guy could move dirt with the best of us and as a result we were better for it knowing that the old man would never ask us to do the impossible and we weren't going to be out operated by an old man.
