Does anyone still convert their diesel engines to run on cooking oil?

Everyone I know who did it ended up with injector issues and gave up.

Common rail diesel injection systems will not handle cooking oil, ultra low sulfur diesel only

I never converted used cooking oil but I used to buy and put a gallon of new vegetable oil in my tank on my old idi 7.3. seemed to make it run better at least never hurt it. I figured that old motor was not made for the low sulfur stuff. the exhaust smelled like French fries when I did that.. I think I need to get that old truck back on the road. it's a 5 speed and I keep it so I could teach the boys to drive a standard.

A friend at church has an early 2000s f-250 that has been running on cooking oil for years.

Cooking oil or bio-diesel? They are not the same thing.

Cooking oil is converted to bio-diesel by mixing it with methanol (think yellow bottle of HEAT from auto parts store) and lye (drain cleaner crystals). Breaks down to about 9 parts bio-diesel to 1 part glycerin. You can do that in a 2 liter soda bottle on your kitchen counter. Mix it, shake it, and presto magic.......it settles right out.

Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

Older diesels work fine with it, new ones won't. Some guys use waste transmission oil too.

There was a fisherman years ago that traveled a lot for tournaments. He would get used oil from restaurants and bring it home where he had a big set up to filter it and store it for use. Apparently he saved a lot of money on fuel costs. I don't remember if it was field & stream or outdoor life where I read it.

cooking oil needs some processing, filtering and removing some components of the oil, Not difficult but necessary, Doesn't really pay anymore here, all the restaurants get payed for their waste oil for future processing.

A lot of the waste vegetable oil (WVO) supply has dried up. McDonald's reuses it's own oil in the trucks that deliver supplies. Being that WVO is sold and has value , lots of it is locked up to prevent theft.

and have just one cook or dishwasher dump a pan full of degreaser in the wast oil tank and you can have very bad results from a few stories I read.
