For those that are still working and have had surgery where you're down for a while? Do you have disabilty insurance of some kind or do you just ride it out with no pay till you go back to work?

I had Aflac for a while and it helped when I was off during the “waiting week” for workers comp. But that’s something you gotta sign up for prior

Thanks to a Union job, lol…my first week counts as sick leave anything after that is short term disability. I get 52 weeks paid short term disability. I learned from others, never file workmen's comp, lol. It happened off the job!! Once short term starts a claim is immediately filed and let’s say I’m back at work and something happens to what I went out with to begin with, I can go out again under that claim without any type of penalty.
I was out 5 months once with shoulder surgery and almost 3 months with a hip. Never missed a paycheck or a day of pay.

Best money ever spent American fidelity. 99.9 won’t pay in workers comp. yes you wait 2 weeks but you get back pay. Broke my ankle playing church league softball. Missed 12 weeks work. Would have been bankrupt if not for r it. Also had an accident policy that paid 2,000 for broken bone so it covered the missed overtime I lost out on. Aflacc is a joke compared to others

You should have gotten the metlife supplemental. Would've paid you extra for the being out both times.

How do you go bankrupt over 12 weeks of work? Are you that broke and vulnerable?

the odds of disability at any working age is about the same as death, however you can become disabled multiple times. I mostly sold disability insurance to professionals. It is imperative to select the COLA rider when obtaining
coverage.

Are you that rich and ignorant?
This happened when I was 27 years old. I doubt many 27 year olds could withstand having zero income for 12 weeks. Point of this post is if disability insurance is worth it. Just bought a house and truck. Working 2 jobs at the time. Every one isn’t as smart and rich as you have been since you were born. Things were a lot different in 1990 or were for me financially

I have AFLAC I picked up at a job in my 20’s. Yeah it pays out quite well and I was grandfathered in my old plan when they raised their rates. I honestly don’t see how they stay in business. They’ve paid me way more than I’ve paid them. So I “made” money by going out, lol.

I am self-employed and had neck surgery to try to save my spinal cord (3 degenerative disks which lead to neuropathy and only had one fixed). I had no kind of insurance to see me through the healing process of about 2-3 months. Went through a good bit of money being off then went back to work too soon, but kind of had to. I have 2 other bottlenecks in my spine and the bottom half of my back has bulged disks- they denied me for disability and I didnt continue fighting it- stayed working. What is killing me now is this constant inflation and my health not allowing me to do anywhere near what I was capable of before. Cant say if the procedure helped, Im a trainwreck but may be worse off without it.

With his winning personality, probably had no friends to borrow from. I'll put you on the" no chance to borrow from" list. smile

one of my union benefits is short term disability insurance. It cost me nothing it's part of the compensation package. I have utilized it a few time over the last 18 years when hurt #broken hand and work would not let me work with it, 5 months off when trying to decide if I have MS. I have to be off and the first 7 days you don't get paid for. It Typically takes about a month to get your first check by the time the paperwork get sent in by the Dr. and they process it but that first check is for the entire time so a larger one. The pay I'd not a lot I don't remember but around 300 a week maybe 250 but it sure better than nothing coming in at all. It's a supplement not an I come replacement.

Just like jbyrd63 there was a time when I was younger it was a life saver. Today it's a nice benefit but I can go for a year without a pay check but it was not always like that. When I was young many times I was behind and working side Jobs and all the OT I could get. Back starting out when I had nothing and before I learned how to Handel money.

Worked for a company that provided both short and long term disability and haf a fantastic health insurance policy before Obamacare. It was a salvation when I had open heart surgery, out for 16 weeks and a family to raise.
