Going to put down our 26 year old mare. She was always a good horse... a white Andalusian who was a mountain endurance champ before we bought her in 2010. Her name was Haizea, which is the Basque word for the wind. She had a foal soon after we bought her, as the seller had been told by the vet that the artificial insemination, (the fourth attempt), didn't take. We gave the foal and the mare to the seller, as it was his dream to raise the foal from day one. He gave us back the mare after 6 months. The vet comes tomorrow morning and they'll pick up the carcass on Thursday. The vet figured that she has an intestinal tumor of some kind, but it has been impossible to get her guts working well and she's lost a lot of weight. Going into winter, we figured it is time. I've dealt with horses in the more tradional way before, but with my wife involved.. this will be different. An old picture from the farm years ago. She loved to watch me in the woodshop. Thanks, Pete

You've given her a great home and care.
This is indeed a difficult decision. I have had to help friends in this more times than I wanted. But that's what friends do in these times. Working with the veterinarian as well.
What a nice photo of Haizea ...the wind.
A suggestion....have your wife not see when Haizea looses her footing....and once on the ground, cover her with a large tarp. Some memories are impossible to clear from the mind in these times. Have the last goodbyes be the best as can be.
I do understand...and I am sorry, Pete.
Great advice Sharon. This is what I did when we had to have my wife’s mare put down. RIP Lady. Eric
