...the total amount of money this storm is gonna cost. Down here the $$ amount of mature pine forests snapped and on the ground is mind-boggling. Our oaks and other hardwoods are devastated...this storm causing even more damage that last year's Idalia. ALL of the oak ridges and bottoms are now impenetrable. The number of damaged homes and structures is shocking. Everyone in a 30 to 40 mile swath (or wider) has damage, with many a total loss. On a side note: I wonder how this already struggling wild turkey population handled this. They were on the roost when it hit here around midnight. There is no way that many were not killed. Here is a recent pic of a buck on one of my leases with his left side broken off and his left eye swollen and damaged left ear. I don't think he did that in a fight....

On the other hand the surviving wildlife has a whole lot of new hiding spots. They’ll be dying of old age in that mess.

With so much cover destroyed, all the Boa's and Pythons will be living large for a while!

The way it’s going, we’re one Hurricane away from wiping out all of Georgia’s swamps/oaks of old. Chickasawhatchee took a huge hit many years ago and will never ever be the same in my lifetime or my children’s…if ever. Do you think the Bobwhite quail population will benefit from all the downed trees? Keith

Yes. And rabbits. Missouri Conservation Commission did a research paper years ago stating that one of the reasons the quail and rabbit population were down in Missouri was because farmers were clearing out their fence rows to get more tillage from their ground. Farm machinery is better now now than it was back then. More efficient. Dad was a farmer when I was small and I can remember those old farms with generous fence rows. Something you don't see now. Old depression era farms sometimes didn't get much usage in the 50s and early 60s. The farmers got old and either quit or limited their farming. It was good habitat for the small critters.

Seeing just bits and pieces from the news and some pics sent up from friends. None of it truly illustrate the level of devastation. Back in I think '07, we had 32" of rain over a 2-1/2-3 day span by our farm. Amounts varied a lot by just a mile or so around us. The last day of storms hit us with line winds that just uprooted and laid over all our hardwoods. Lost oaks that were in the 150-200 year old. Took a few years to get the roads & bridges built back.
By no means to de disrespectful to those who lost in this, but in the years to come the wildlife will benefit in massive ways. The dense cover, new growth, and everything that comes with a rebirth will support populations to grow quickly.
Thoughts to all who have been impacted by this
The only thing worse than losing........Is QUITTING! Lifetime Member WTA

Beavers have all the building materials they will need for the rest of the year so imagine you'll have a bumper crop of them!
Feel for the folks that lost everything, house/business, no idea how you would recover from that and bills keep coming in even though your not working or living in the house you bought on credit!
Doubt many had flood insurance in those hills so even the one's that did have home owner's it probably won't pay anything.
Sad situation for alot of folks.

If that forest is down and dead, what may help would be some controlled burns this winter to clean it up and let it start over.
