And they turned it down????? How is the inflation doing Mr. Biden? That is insane, according to the article the average wage is now $80,000 plus benefits. That is just price gouging to me and look out for prices to go up more folks......jk

All the union lovers on here are awful quiet. Feel sorry for the actual workers that just want to work and provide for their family, maybe they will go find a 'normal' job that isn't run like the mafia.

Honest question: would you defend anything and everything these unions do or say?
It's just out of control. Like LeBron James getting $ 90 million from NIKE as an 18 year old! Now he's a billionaire , for playing basketball. Yet farmers that provide the food we all eat , get crap for their effort ! And the worst part they ( billionaires ) tell their followers what to think. When they never had to worry about feeding their families , or making ends meet! I don't begrudge their wealth , but to just sit on it and dictate how others are to live is insane ! Would love to see the economy tank, and those billions be worth nothing same as happened in Germany in the 1920's. Farmers and those that really work will survive , while ( I personally would tell them suffer ) those telling the world how to live will all of a sudden be helpless.
The cheap crap being shipped in won’t be so cheap. Opportunities will be created here to make products competitively. Buying American made may even be a real thing again.
I do see the shippers side of it. Someone commented they are making 300% more shipping however, they are taking all the risk. Thanks to Pirates, insurance rates are through the roof not to mention the fuel costs for taking routes to avoid them. Things aren’t always as they seem.
find a 3 bed 2 bath house within 20 minutes of the port in decent neighborhood , take what it would cost and divide by 3 that is about what they would need to make to afford that house.
it is going to change by port but 80K a year would be a 240K house
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
I don’t pretend to know enough about the subject and am impartial relative to unions. My number 1 worry in all of this is it fast tracks more automation. I’m hopeful these men and women don’t price themselves out of jobs before the next contract down the line.

Could go that way even without automation. If stuff starts being made here competitively those ships won’t be coming to ports, no ships, no need for dock workers.

That's exactly what they're doing. In 78 the steel workers walked out on US Steel in Alabama. US Steel locked the doors and Birmingham and Jefferson County all but died.

I disagree. One huge factor that will prevent this is start up costs. The cost of permits, real estate, engineering, etc here makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to move production to the States and make the same profit. Not to mention the cost of adhering to EPA regulations. It will work the same as tariffs. You and I will pay it, the company's bottom line won't change.

WHY would anyone want to make anything here? When your workforce just unionizing and walks out the door leaving your company high and dry on a whim! If i know ahead of time a product is union made i'll pay triple for something else not union made, that's how much im against all these thugs!
Not my circus, not my clowns.

Hard to be sympathetic for a union whose boss said he will " cripple" the US economy.
Poor guy, I don't know how he makes ends meet, probably collecting aluminum cans to.afford the 7,100 sq ft mansion and the Bentley. On a measley $900,000/ year.
Squeaky clean though!
"Daggett, who has previously fought off federal accusations of Mafia connections, became the president of the International Longshoremen's Association in 2011. This position comes with a salary of $728,000 annually, along with an additional $173,000 from ILA-Local 1804-1.
In 2005, he was accused of steering union benefits contracts to companies that gave kickbacks to organized crime during a Brooklyn trial, according to The Wall Street Journal.
That same year, Daggett took the stand after federal prosecutors charged him and two others with racketeering.
He portrayed himself as a target of the mob, despite testimony from a former Mafia member claiming that Daggett was a member of the Genovese crime family, The New York Times reported."
Funny thing, one of the folks on trial disappeared. His remains were later found in a car trunk, in NJ. Probably banged his head, and passed out, trying to.unload groceries at the homeless shelter!
And what are the odds, Daggert's son is doing right well too!

They will all be out of a job soon. If I owned the ports, I'd take this opportunity to upgrade my automation at the ports. The Chinese already have one that is totally automated as a guide. The cheap stuff being imported is due to union workers pricing American businesses out of the market, hence all the manufacturing moved out of the country. But a union worker will never understand that.

The long beach CA port is already fully automated,,,,,
I'd fire all of the striking workers and hire a bunch of Mexicans to replace them. That's how you lower prices.
I am sure that is how you get top notch security at your ports also.
Hey world , just ship your fentanyl directly here we have illegals manning our ports so we can gave CRAP cheaper
Right, think that through. The unions have been already been letting it into our country. Plus, the unions are cliqued up with the mob and God knows who else. Plus, they're lazy and entitled. Adios Amigos!
hmm Dave P sounds like a bunch of accusations two times trying to put the son in a cage and yet nothing at all sticks. Kind of like the left aren't you now. well someone says they are doing it so they are guilty. No need to bother proving it in court or if they try and can't prove it in court still guilty anyway. Harris is thankful for your vote.

But then they can at least find a job here if they are are not all filled with illegals.
Another thing it's likely a raise od x % each year over the corse of the contract not all at once. Ours was 4.3, 4.5, 4.1 oor similar each year of the contract . each year compounded the Rais of the last and looking at the Raise over the 4 or 5 year contract it sounded much larger than being honest and saying it was a 4.5% rase each year.
yes it's a large Raise. Did they loose health care coverage, have a large increase in out of pocket health care cost that will come out of that Raise and not go to their check.
for years we took smaller raises to keep our Healthcare coverage the same. Then the company wants to hang it so heck yes now Your going to pay more on the check.
There is a lot more to it than just the total compounded Raise over the full term of the contract. yes that's a large # and used for shock factor for those that can't think lime the liberal democrats.
if they price themselves out of a job that's their choice. Cause and effect its happend before and will again.
BC yes things are better now because of unions. Get rid of them and thing will just go backwards. So few shops are union any more and non-union shops pay pretty well and have ok benefits ofter very close to unions. Have you asked yourself why? Because they compete for the same labor force and have had to step up the pay and benefits to get workers r to work for them instead of quiting to go to the union plant for more pay and better benefits.
Sometimes I wonder? Liberal Democrats love unions.
"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Donald Trump and Kamala Harris continue to court labor union voters, Americans are much more likely to say the Democratic Party best serves the interests of union members (62%) than to say the Republican Party does (27%)."
"Partisans’ approval of labor unions continues to differ, with Democrats more supportive than Republicans and independents falling between the two groups. Democrats’ latest approval of 94% is the highest it has been in the past quarter century and is up six points since last year. At the same time, Republicans' (49%) and independents' (67%) approval is essentially unchanged."

First of all…how long is their contract? If it’s 10+ years then that 50% is spread out over the 10 years. We just got a 20% raise over the life of our 5yr contract.

we choose to offer only a 2 year contract as the volatility was just too great in our housing market , labor costs , they wanted a 5 and we have no idea what things will look like in 5 so it made more sense to offer the union 2 years that way if we need to adjust we can , but we owe it to the tax payer to not pay out more than necessary speculating on labor but also provide a quality well maintained department.
the union agreed to 2 years with no issues.

I may retire at the end of this contract, may hold out and see what the new contract looks like. Although with the money we’ll be making I may not retire at all, lol.

The father, current ILA pres, is the one the Feds went after twice, not the son. Even the Mafia said he was connected to them. Witness disappeared, remains found later.
Coincidence, I'm sure.
The son just happened to fall into.a couple ILA gigs as well, paying $700k/year. Little short of Daddy Daggert, but imagine he can scrape by.
Harris? My vote? LOL, Daggert endorsed Biden in 2020 and urged his members to do the same.
Publicity making the union idiot's look bad, can't have that! They keep thinking they have the support of the American worker cause like all entitled idiot's if it wasn't for them the average non union worker would be working in the salt mines for a cup of rice a day!
So after the Holiday's we all get to go through this stupid bs again?
Biden / Harris bunch told em to shut up and sit down. Was making them look bad going into an election. Can't help them after election if they don't win.
Easy to vote your way into socialism, but impossible to vote your way out of it.

I agree.
I wouldn't be surprised if Daggett was told to stand down and told to take a short-term settlement now vs. dragging the strike out while the Dems were trying to win the White House. I doubt a prolonged strike would do any favors to Kamala and Tim's chances of winning the election.

Exactly. Democrats can't take the chance of this strike making them look bad with an election coming, so they told the union to shut up and go back to work for now. The union being loyal, did as told.
Post election if a D win then the pressure to give the union everything. If an R win then the union can create a mess to kick off the expected trouble.
I'm not a dock worker but look at the jobs technology has taken away. Ask the 10 cashiers that got laid off from your local Lowe's, Menard's, Walmart etc. because of self checkout. Ask the fast food restaurant workers about automated drive thru workers. It goes on but I'm to tired to type. Eventually they'll be two classes of Americans. The rich business owners and the poor who's jobs they work will be below poverty level because it's not profitable for technology to take it over. There will still be trade jobs but what technology is leading to is a socialist country.

I'm not going back to look. My point is you sound and act like the left. Charge someone and no conviction and yep guilty. O an x mob guy said he worked for the mob. Wonder what he got to do so? I'm sure a mob guy is stand up and honest! The mob takes care of rats. Don't meant it's related.
Inicent tell guilty used to be a thing in America. is he guilty of what they say I don't know probably. But in our country it has to be proven in court.
Quit acting like a democrat and jumping on the band wagon. I'm sure you don't like the bs they are doing with Trump. Make claims spend years harassing him and the media reporting is like its facts and the Left running with it.
It works both ways not just when it's your guy.

Seems obvious to me. Big D, supporter of the criminal gang's known as international unions, could not allow this strike to continue in an election year. It would be nice to know what was going on behind closed doors.
Big D is now saying no money for hurricane relief. Plenty for illegals and Ukrainians though.
Its not good.
