Always was enamored with the Christmas lyric and had a chance to try some roasted chestnuts last year. I don’t get it. Thought they were rather tasteless and don’t see the appeal.

I bring all of this up as I planted 20 or so chestnuts from bare root 3 years ago for the game plots and I’m getting my first drop of them.

Anyone here really have a taste for them and a recipe you’d like to share??

Hmmm I have found that water chestnuts are also quite tasteless but add a nice fresh crunch to stir frys. I am not sure about regular chestnuts

I find chestnuts bland and mealy, roasted barely makes them better. They're good pig food though.... grin

The first time I had them I wasn't impressed but the more times I tried them the more I liked them. There are a couple guys at work that order hundreds of pounds every year. I usually buy a few pounds from them after they have roasted and shelled them. I eat them just roasted (I keep them in the freezer and heat them in the microwave for eating). They are also good with butter and salt, like popcorn.

My family is not as impressed as I am so I have them to myself.

I gave my youngest brother two Bob River's Christmas CDs at Christmas one year.

Might depend on whether your talking chinese chestnuts or European. The very best hands down are the Americans. (C. dentata). Also, you want those chestnuts to be cured...not fresh.

would rather have them raw and fresh out of the Burr. not much on them more than a day or so after they fall.

I tried them raw yesterday. Better than roasted, but still didn’t see the attraction. I can definitely see why game would be all over them.

The ones that haven't got much on them never had much on them....they weren't properly pollinated and usually are early drops.

I have found the same as you. Water chestnuts make for a nice crunch. I have added them to tuna salad that adds a better crunch than just celery. Certainly surprises some people.
