Run into people like that all the time. They honestly just don’t know.
These same folks then asked if it broke bones? I asked if they’d ever seen me in a cast? It took them a minute, but then they asked if I’ve ever caught my hand in one? I told them that’s for amateurs, us professionals can catch just one finger!! They asked if it hurt, I told them not too bad, at least not until I reached the end of the chain. Of course that leads to the entire setting process, etc.
Most eventually say that’s so cool and they had no idea an animal could be released unharmed.

… I just tell them they’re sissies out of touch with nature and hope a coyote eats their labradoodle

Insert profound nonsense here

Several times I've been out on public land and talked to people hunting or just out for a walk or whatever, and they see me trapping and get to talking about it, and you can almost see the fear in their eyes. Sticking my own hand in a trap right in front of them, and yanking hard on the chain to show that not only does it not cut off my fingers, but that I can rip on it without causing injury, goes a long ways towards easing their fears.

So, for my own knowledge how do I respond appropriately to this question? Was this trap a - trap or could the yote been on there too long? Adrenaline is heck* of a drg, so I can see that having an impact on pain tolerance for the animals. Thank you for being patient with my "newby questions"!

This fox was in so much pain from the trap it decide to eat some more lure off the end of the stick.

And this one was so uncomfortable she took a nap.

You have to remember that 1 out of 3 Democratic Voters is just as dumb as the other two.

Kendall Gray has a video of accidentally getting his hand stuck in his trap and it DID draw some blood:

Although I think he was a little unlucky where it got him by the fingernail.

On the flip-side, he also has this video:

I love that kid! My boys and I used to binge watch his stuff all the time. Kinda stopped, but not his fault, when YouTube started censoring everything. I need to get caught up on his property project. smile

Really a good kid. It's hard finding clean stuff on YT. For my boys.

Youd think theyd know better, but the subjects are too diverse unless directed focus in learning is applied.

Well done. You are a teacher in the least expected times.

That is very kind of you. I would love to sit down with kids, like 5th and 6th graders, and be able to talk to them. Especially young girls as they are so soft hearted towards animals. I wish somebody would have talked to me about this kind of stuff when I was young. And that person was approachable enough to have the message heard

You have good communication skills and a sense of humor. Your career obviously has helped to hone how you relate with people , along with , I feel, a natural predisposition to have discernment. That can be self-taught, but some do have the rather rare ability for having insight, discernment, to see below the surface. And that is what it takes to be able to relate with kids, and adults.

You can see the need right in the moment, and be able to help folks see point by point , as needed at the time.

You'll enjoy those opportunities as they come your way. Your career is perfect for this too.

I wish I could channel it through work somehow without the tables being turned on my doctor/owner of the practice.
Baby steps. The raffle basket for wildlife rehab broke some ice.
As I said earlier, most people become more receptive to regulated trapping if they know it means that their pets are afforded more protection from predation and disease.

I think the way I was raised also taught me to tread lightly and use discernment when speaking to others. Have your words “seasoned with salt” wink
