that thread on favorite fishing lures
well 5 bucks left my wallet today to try an Erie Dearie

do you tie them on direct to the line or use a snap swivel

I saw references to with a nightcrawler what other ways do you rig them?

what are your favorite ways to fish them?

I have a Mepps #3 on the way also

i never used a Erie Dearie other then when i fished Lake Erie. We rigged them with a stinger hook and a night crawler. And trolled them. Tied them directly to the line.

I have them, used them- tied directly to the line, if your targeting walleyes and your boat is set up for trolling- it's hard to beat a bottom bouncer with a crawler or leech harness. We picked up a lot of non-target fish with the Earie Dearie, kind of a pain when we're running boards.

Been using them for decades on lake MI for Browns and Steelhead. They are very versatile in use. In winter, we tip with smelt for browns at the power plants. I’ve tipped with a lot of plastics, paddle tails, curl tails, fin S fish., … all works well. For trolling for steelhead, I tie different variations of feather or hair trailers

I've been using them for decades on Erie. I cast them with 3/4 of a nightcrawler attached.
I ALWAYS use a ball bearing swivel. If you don't you will get the worst line twist you could ever imagine.
For about two months out of the year, I cast them 5 days a week.
I like the older style that are soldered instead of twisted wire to put them together. The blades spin closer to the shaft which gives me a better feel and depth control.

For fishing really big ponds like the Great Lakes. Not a southern thing.

I've used them with good results in the local reserviors. Tipped with crawler, leech or minnow. I've had days where they wanted to see a specific color combo. Pink and white always was my starter color though slow trolling.

I think they and lures like them work best in waters(usually larger) where fish suspend between bottom and surface trolled or drifting at speed enough to keep them off the bottom. Different weights and line or speed to get them to fish holding depth. Limited in how deep they will drop. Have used the lightest ones with good luck in some mid sized waters and rivers where fish are suspending in the top of weed beds of uniform depth(they can be pretty weedless if hook is replaced with offset hook and plastic of choice). Also drug along the bottom of sand bottomed lakes(that spinner slapping on the. sand seems to really get them aggressive. Hold onto your rod good. A good swivel inline a foot or more ahead of lure really saves on line twist. Just a locking snap at line end lets you quick change lure size, color, type till you pattern them.
