Pan covers suck. Prove me wrong.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

That's why there's a trapping only forum.

Pan covers do such because you have to remember to bring em, that's why I use big pans. Don't need a pan cover with those.Especislly when using a healthy layer of peat moss before adding a dirt top coat. I do use some covers on traps that don't have the big pans.

Wondering where’s all the “stock market” doomers gone too?

BTW. Steel screen is the way to go

Gonna try aluminum (didn't have steel mesh at home) this year.

I would think that your bedding/covering choices greatly influence your choice of pan cover/underall/ etc.

I am going to try the Zagger method this year using grass clippings for cover, hence my use of the aluminum cover. When using sifted dirt, I was using coffee filter covers (not my favorite) and polyfil (much easier for me than the filters).

Aluminum or plastic screen = something is always uncovering your trap. That's been my experience. Most of the time a pan cover just isn't needed on a trap with a short throw. Maybe if you are in sand, but not in most farm or woods dirt.
Big pans suck too, in my experience, at least on small traps in land sets.

Very common question lately.

I use a piece of paper towel for a cover.

Doesn't it rain where you are?

If using screen to enlarge your pan area,
they might suck.
If using screen with small traps,
that probably sucks.
Can't help with the other.

I tried using pan covers. I also tried not using them. Didn’t notice much of a difference so now I don’t use them. Of course I am not an accomplished trapper.

It’s funny how you guys can get on here and blab and fuss like a bunch of old Nanny goats about anything you would like.
But the minute a woman has “a moment” about something she wants to share and that’s actually funny, she’s a Nag and she’s high maintenance.
Full of double standards, this goofy place

Land trapping predators, no pan cover, just lots of peat moss. Trapping in sand dunes, latex pan covers. I was using paper but the mice eat them!

I wasn't being all that serious or targeting women.
(,You probably think this thread is about you, don't you, don't you?)
Funny how people can joke but not recognize joking when I do it.

I like peat moss. I hate peat moss.
Seriously, it just depends. Works great on reds with step down sets, but sometimes fox, especially greys will dig at it even with a top covering.

I'm thinking of using coffee filters just because they're easy. Can any of you talk me out of coffee filters? (This will be my first season trapping.)

Those who advocate the steel screen say that it increases the area to trigger the trap beyond the pan, so in theory should increase the catch rate.

Yep, never had more of a problem than the usual dirt sinking from the rain.

Interesting...I am imagining the towel soaking up water and freezing solid.
