A couple of days ago my neighbor lost his power and asked if he could get some water off the hydrant on my well for his cattle. He took about 700 gallons during the day. Since then water pressure in house is cut almost in half. Does the pump need to be primed?
Thanks

700gals is a lot without much recovery time. Is your pump still running?

Deep well with a submersible pump or shallow with a jet pump?

change or flush the water filter if you have one

Probably drained your well and the filter is clogged with mud.

If no filter the screens on the facet could be plugged. I just had to pull my pump a week ago. The barb that hooks the pump to the pitiless broke. Once hooked up I had no presser at the facets, but plenty in the tub. I pulled the screens on the face, cleaned them and all has been well since.

I would shut the pump down and give the well a chance to recover.

We lost pressure and it was a galvanized coupler where the plastic pipe hooks onto the pump. Had holes through, half the water was pumping back into the well. The well guy replaced it with brass.

Getting air or needs recovering. Does pump sound good when running?

Is your pump shutting off when you turn all your facets off? I would look for a leak.

In most of Ohio, you could pull 1500 gallons out of a home well a day without any issues. I don't know about New York, but 700 gallons doesn't sound like much. Because of the timing, it seems unlikely that the loss of water pressure isn't related. If the hydrant is not used much, something might have broken. Could something have broken in the hydrant that is letting water flow straight into the ground?

I would definitely change your filter first if you have one. Drawing that much water will stir things up down at the bottom of the well.

If I had that problem I would make sure all water is shut off at the fixtures. Well should not be running.

Check the pressure in the pressure tank, make sure it's in sync with the pressure switch. Google it for directions.

A well pump is only good for 8-15 years depending on the amount of debris run through it.

A pressure issue relating to the pump itself would only show up after youve used up the pressure from the pressure tank and you're relying on the pump.

You probably need a new pressure tank. The thing in the basement or crawl space. Its internal bladder is the source to maintain even water pressure not the well or pump. Your pump fill that tank, which is expanding a ballon if you will in that tank, and when the set pressure is reached the pump kicks off, then as the water baloon deflates its maintaining the pressure in the lines. Then when the pressure drops below the low set point the pump kicks on and fills it again until it reaches the high set point and it kicks off again. Generally you mess with the switch points and make sure its set and working like it should and then if you can't get it you change the tank to get a new water below b/c they get holes in them and then don't maintain pressure very well.

Update. Learned today a week ago neighbor took 700 gallons in a couple of hours. Amish dude stopped when I wasn’t home got another 75 gallons. Dry here for 3 weeks. Amish guy told my neighbor his water looked murky. Went easy last week and pressure appears normal. Lock now on hydrant.
Thanks for help. Rain Weds.
