In my area the Environmental Police/game wardens are so short staffed , so trying to get them to come and set up the robo-deer is about impossible. So Any ideas on how to stop a habitual road hunter driving on a public dirt road where all land is private and posted, short of violating the law ?

Take a video and go to the county prosecutor if your willing to testify

now if breaking the law isn't an issue
make a stuffed deer and load with 50# of binary and put it 50 feet off the road , the pressure wave is going to take out his windows and le the whole county know what he done.

I bought my land 25 years ago and planted 3 rows of evergreens along the right of way. ( 3/4 mile) In a couple of years it became so thick that road hunters went elsewhere. It's a long term fix, not a current solution.

How about a fake deer with game cams in the right spot to take the shot. A picture of a barrel out the window might be convincing. You would have to get a deer that could fool someone though

I like GCP's exploding deer idea!

It's a big problem in both rifle deer and spring turkey seasons on the timber company lease I hunt. The manager sends out newsletters throughout the year and there's usually a warning about road hunting but it never stops the guys that do it. It's all logging roads and two tracks but many are accessible with a 4WD vehicle and ATV's of course.

The standard warning is, "if you pass the same place in an hour, you're road hunting." Like I said, it doesn't stop anybody.

An exploding deer would make them think twice though. grin

just so that we define this , in WI you can shoot from a gravel or dirt road as long as you are fully not in a vehicle and your long gun has to be unloaded any time it is in a vehicle. so long as you have permission to hunt both sides of the road. you can walk down the gravel road and shoot squirrels out of the trees.

if you only have permission on one side you need to get off the road on your side.
on a paved road you have to be 50feet from the center line or beyond the fence on a interstate/freeway

Frigid forage plot screen is a good speedy alternative.

We aren't all criminals. I have a handicap hunting permit so I can hunt from my vehicle. Sucks but that's as good as it will ever get for me. The first year I used it I expected to be checked by the game warden. He drove by as I watched a hillside from my truck in a state game lands, he just smiled and waved.

Shoot a cottontail. Skin it removing from the neck down leaving the head attached. Stuff it with newspaper and set it in an obvious place with a couple trail cameras set to video the shooters. Send the videos to your local came warden.

PA Regulation:

Road Hunting: It is unlawful to 1) hunt from a vehicle; 2) shoot at
wildlife on a public road or right-of-way open to public travel; 3)
shoot across a road unless the line of fire is high enough to preclude
any danger to road users; and 4) alight from a vehicle and shoot at any
wildlife until the shooter is at least 25 yards from the traveled portion
of the roadway. NOTE: These provisions do not prevent an individual,
who may not qualify for a Disabled Person’s Permit, but who has
health concerns or problems to sit in or near a legally “parked” ve-
hicle and watch for game. Loaded firearms may never be placed in,
on or against any motor vehicle at any time.

A camp member and close friend (RIP Rex) had a handicap permit and was legally allowed to hunt out of his vehicle. Under PA law a handicapped person can have one able-bodied person with him to help dress and drag big game. I often helped Rex with that.

Some PA Game Lands have handicapped trails on them. The bonus for me was I got to get out and still-hunt areas that would have required miles-long hikes to get to. Rex was able to rive his 4WD near those spots. I'd still-hunt while he sat in his truck next to the trail hoping to see a deer.

The ones doing it where I hunt are mostly middle-aged guys too lazy to walk a little or drag a deer far.

* Lazy. Middle aged has nothing to with it.

Not just paved roads, roadways;
Roadway
The portion of the highway which is
improved or ordinarily used for vehicle
travel, excluding the berm or shoulder

I have a lot of gravel roads around the cabin, but they are considered roadways.

Hunting Near Roadways
It is illegal to:
ƒ Hunt within 50 feet of the roadway’s
center.
ƒ Discharge a firearm or airgun, shoot an
arrow from a bow or shoot a bolt from
a crossbow:
ƒ From or across a highway.
ƒ Within 50 feet of the roadway’s center.
The above prohibitions apply to all public
roads.
Note: Certain exceptions are allowed for
Class A and Class B shoot from vehicle
disabled permit holders, and for hunting
small game or turkeys from dirt or gravel
roads with shotguns loaded with fine shot.
Visit dnr.wisconsin.gov/permits/disabled.
