I am embryonic with dosage and velocities. When the weight of the animal has to be estimated, is it common to error a little heavy with the dosage to make sure or go a little light with the dosage and wait a bit to see if it was enough? What would be the effective range using a blow gun versus carrying a dart gun in my truck. I have been using my 5 foot skunk pole and have not been getting great results as it can be a challenge when the target animal is moving around more than 5 feet. I can tell you that using a tacoma to limit the amount of room the target has is also not the ideal tool. I will be ordering better supplies soon and would welcome any advice from those who have experience with larger animals. I have spent enough time with cattle and horses to know enough to be dangerous. Thoughts?

I assume you're working under a veterinary license as nite nite drugs are DEA controlled items. If so the license holder should have the dosage knowledge if not the delivery methodology.

Like you I know just enough to be dangerous. As for velocity you need both penetration and enough to depress a plunger.

What critters you trying to take down? I also know that it's not a one size fits all as susceptibility and od risks vary by species. I've been told equines in particular need a goldilock just right dose or it might go south.

I've dealt with 6 bear now and the last one was #300 +. 2 of my farms and 3 of our vets have tranq guns but it seems no one is available or calls take to long to be returned when I am an hour or so away and need to deal with issues as they arise. It blew there mind when I mentioned using a blow gun, currently looking at the Maxi Ject blowpipe with the 5 mil syringes which can be loaded with less.

Thought it might be bear. Swamp Wolf is our guy here that's dealt with nuisance blackies. He's a retired Georgia DNR officer. If anyone knows he would be my first stop.

Thanks, our local DNR help has left a lot to be desired with some of the wolf releases. I have no issues with wolves or bobcat with one or the other being released weekly. A majority of my issues are on private land behind gates and my landowners limit who may ride with me and although they would understand if I brought the DNR in, I am sure they prefer I handle things that can be handled. These boys are very protective of the bucks on these properties. Cell cam pics and success pics are only to be seen by a select few. smile No fences just large acreage.
Pretty sure I will figure it out - just looking for pointers.

High hazard, high liability area I don't recommend you "figure out" on your own! At the least, you and your sources of the controlled substances can get in a real jamb with the Feds. It requires proper training and and licensing.

I've have been using a blow gun for many years for grizzlies, wolves, tigers, leopards, etc.I need to be certified annually by veterinarian which means classroom study along with field practical. Not to be taken lightly. Have used blowgun in Russia, Mongolia, Alaska, Idaho, Montana. Use telinject system for helicopter darting and long-shots when up a tree (black bears, etc.). PM me for details.

I used a jab pole to inject 100% of the time. Most the bears I caught were held in foot snares. A couple were in culvert traps.

Using that jab pole on the larger bears was a bit worrisome. I always made sure of a solid cable hold first.

Never used or seen a blow gun injection rig. DNR Game Mgmt did have tranq guns, but didn't let this game warden use one of em.....and I was volunteering to do their nuisance work for them. They probably wanted me to get clawed and bit up.

They did provide me with everything else.....foot snares, culvert trap, jab pole, syringes, needles, Ketamine, Rompin, Yohembine, ear tags, tattoo kit, premolar puller, etc.

Gulo, that pic is amazing. Very interesting reads when you post. Seems that you’ve had the kind of career that I wish I knew existed when I was a teenager. Believe I would have been infatuated with trying to make that a reality.

Has anyone ever considered a lower velocity cross bow? Shouldn't too big of a deal to rig a syringe to a bolt, a lot more accurate, and give you more reach for safety.

They already have crossbows for meds and tranqs if I'm not mistaken , I'm sure I saw ads for them in livestock magazines
