Never hurts to wait. If your lucky you might have caught th artery up by the spine. If your in a tree you should have a lower exit wound.

I'd be out there looking by now. Walk slow and easy. I bet you find the deer dead. Was it a big one?

I doubt it’s lethal. What type broad head. If it didn’t knock it down then you missed the spin.

The first year I bow hunted I shot a mule deer buck high. Just under the spine and over the lungs. It cut the main artery just under the spine. He went 50-60 yards.

Providing you hit where you think there is to me a poor chance of recovery. Even if you were in a tree. If temps allow wait 12 hours and he may lay down and bleed out.
There is a larger gap between the spine and the lungs than what some believe.
Are you sure the arrow didn’t pass through? I have shot many deer I never found the arrow to. But these were all shot from the ground. Did you have a lighted noc?
Had a bone been hit to stop the arrow it would almost certainly have been the spine. And that should have knocked the deer down, even if only temporary. Also you should have heard a crack.
There is an artery that does run under the spine. However having hit deer there with a broadhead before they die very quickly. Massive bleeding. Basically as quickly as a lung shot.
I can offhand think of two deer I hit there and never recovered.
One with a broadhead from a treestand. I seen him a few days later and could see the wound. Saw him with the wound a week later and his ears were down and he’d lost his rack. Figured he would soon die. Next year shot a deer with a similar rack and sure enough when skinned I found the scars.
Other one was with a gun. Knocked him down then he was up and gone. Never recovered him.
I had a friend who butchered deer. Did about 2,000 a year. He had a collection of broaheads he had found when butchering deer. The broadheads were all covered in scar tissue. Several were imbedded in the spine and completely healed.
I hope I am wrong and you find him.
If you hit lower than you thought it would be a high lung shot and you should find him

Don't pressure him.

Let him go bed down and die or get stiff for a few hours. Or even overnight and look for him in the morning.

And again, don't pressure him

Yep, if you've opened up that aorta just under the spine but inside the internal cavity, they bleed out fast, especially with bullet damage.

I've only killed one deer with a bow, a double lunger at about 12 yards. I was in a little draw, about half way up one side. The deer ran down slope and tried making out of draw going up the other side but piled up before he made it to the top. The whole thing took less than a minute and I was gutting within 15. I got really, really lucky.

Well waited till 3:30 to go look for the deer. Blood trail fizzled out after about 60 yards, followed the trail it was walking until it faded and then grid searched the area and found no more sign of him. So my guess is he went back to an area he felt safe and bedded down for a while and then being the rut he is back out chasing the ladies. Hopefully he follows one through in the next couple weeks and gives another opportunity.

Shooting a magnus stinger from a 15 foot ladder stand. Shot was about 20 yards.

The first deer I ever put an arrow in, I hit right about that spot. I waited about an hour to track and jumped it. It ran a ways and laid down again. We did this process 2 more times until I was able to get close enough to put another arrow in it. I think that deer would have lived if I hadn't pushed it. By running him, he never had a chance to clot up and, finally, weakened enough to let me get another shot at him.
