I do quite a bit of wood carving, and have used a number of types of wood depending on the project. I do use a lot of cherry, ash, elm, hackberry, even black walnut. As you probably know, green (fresh) wood carves easier, but depending on the project, it may split or crack as it dries. Sometimes when the project is almost done, I will put it into a microwave for a minute or two (even up to 6 minutes on some things). Usually the microwave dries from the inside first and is so rapid that the wood does not have time to crack. So far this year I have carved 318 spoons and 27 bowls, as well as other individual projects. I tell people that I spend a lot of time spooning. It usually gets a laugh.

Redwood holds up to being out in the weather well. Teak would also hold up.

Redwood holds up to being out in the weather well. Teak would also hold up. Those are both good woods. Teak is very expensive. Keith

Tamarac would be my recommendation ! Native species probably available at a local sawmill.
It’s a lazy man who can’t find his wife a second job !
