We always had enough to eat, but not much else. We always had Heinz ketchup, and Hellman's Mayo in the fridge, and once in awhile ice cream,Breyers was best but the local WAWA at the time made good vanilla fudge twirl (still my fav flavor of ice cream).
Dad hunted a lot in the fall and fished for trout in the spring, so we had trout 3 times a week in spring, with home fries and stewed tomatoes, and in the fall we had all sort of wild game, aside from deer LOL Dad wasn't much a deer hunter and in the 70's there were as many deer in Pa as now.

When married we were barley scraping by, and discovered beaver was fine eating, along with rabbits, squirrels and the occasional road killed deer. Kids said they never felt r thought of themselves as poor.

I remember eating sugar sandwiches when we ran out of peanut butter, jelly and bologna.I had to wear hand me down clothes. Trouble was, I only had older sisters...
I wore nails coming through the cut out cornflake box soles of the two dollar shoes that don't fit my foot through most of high school.
We was so po, we couldn't afford the other 'O' or the 'Arra', (For all y'all rich folks, that's how po people say the letter 'R'.)
I'd like to say we was fine with it, but is surely did suck.
Gas station bought Christmas presents, or a bandana blindfold for playin in the street. "Why don't you go play in the street, and don't your blindfold I bought you. I paid good money for that." When your poor, everything said to have cost 'good money', weren't.
We got beat, because the ole man didn't ever give us nothin to take back. It would go like this, "If you don't start acting right I'm gonna take away your...
now turn around and bend over."

Yup I been buyin Hunts ever since I found out. When John Kerry puts on his "shame on you for your carbon footprint" speeches he can buy all his jet fuel home with somebody else's money.I believe Heinz is owned by John Kerrys wife.

I don't think we were allowed to have a preferred for ketchup, but "sodie" crackers were absolutely positively going to be Nabisco Premium Saltines.
