19-YEAR-OLD DUCK HUNTER CLEARED IN WISCONSIN WOLF KILLING

A young man who was duck hunting with a group of youths earlier in the fall will not face charges for shooting a wolf that threatened them in their blind.

As we reported back in September, Chase Melton, 19, was duck hunting along with two friends, aged 13 and 14, when a group of wolves appeared and began to harass the group. Not knowing what to make of the situation, Melton held strong until one of the wolves got so close that he didn’t have much of a choice but to pull the trigger.

A witness, who was hunting about 300 feet away from the group of young boys, was able to corroborate their story, stating that he reportedly saw five wolves surrounding the blind and another four wolves in the nearby vicinity.

Wonder how much it cost him and his family to defend themselves?

State should have to pay his legal costs if any

Not like he went out looking for a wolf to shoot, should have shot every (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) one of them if they were threatening humans

Who would you suggest should pay it?

Nobody. Just drop all charges. Noone gets a payday. Any legal hours is just sucked up as a loss because the case was frivolous to begin with. In no way should I have to foot the bill or any other tax payer.

Eight weeks to make and anounce a decision on a slam dunk. Eight hours would have been reasonable.

Did the kid have to go to court or was he just waiting for the investigation to end?

It doesn’t take that long for a grizzly killing to be cleared here. They skin it, locate the entrance wounds and determine how far it was from the shooter. Not rocket science.

I'm guessing they had to examine and reflect on the political ramifications after the first eight hours of deliberations.
