done a lot of it during my school days or when i wanted to trap without taking off from work.

gets a bit spooky sometimes when the coyotes are on every hilltop around you and their howling. see a lot of cool things though.

I've made a few new sets in the dark when pressed for time. Have done a ton of remakes in the dark.

I check early in the dark but myself would not be able to set in the dark. Maybe some coon sets.

Yes, a holdover habit from the fur boom. Actually still prefer it around civilization.

All the time. I just try to avoid water trapping in the dark, can't trust ice I can't look at, and falling through with daylight sucks bad enough, at night it's a guaranteed death sentence

Think I made one new set in the dark because I wanted a trap out in that spot right then

Otherwise set all mine in the daylight so I can see the area and TRY to read it smile

Have made quite a few remakes in the headlights though

X 2

When pressed for time in the mornings I generally just dispatch, toss in the truck and keep rolling. I'll go back that night to remake.

Eh...wot?

When I was trapping the live market, during 100 + degree days I'd locate fox during the heat of the day. Then go back late evening and set till the locations were covered sometimes it would be after 11 pm before I was finished.
So I would be setting with a head lamp for an hour or more in the evening.

Yep, with short daylight hours, sometimes there’s no other option other than taking vacation days. Gives the line a new twist sometimes…lol

I used to do all my coon trapping at night, back then I used a wheat light and had it on charge when I was at work. It was not an issue, I could see to work on a set like it was daytime with the headlight. You could change the beam to a spot or wide when walking or working on a set. I carried a little frog gig and when walking up a creek in the dark I could see suckers everywhere. So, I would gig them and use them for bait in my pocket sets with a squirt of fish oil. When setting a new place or on a warm rainy night when the coons moved, I would run them in the middle of the night and then again before work. Back then, I really was actually running to check my sets trying to get done before work. Great fun and good money back then.

Man I never get to set in daytime unless it’s weekends but those are not often at start and I set a lot after dark to get the line going. Then as I am checking most of checks and remakes are after work in dark during the week. Scouting ahead of time then it doesn’t matter if it’s light or dark you know where to make the sets and keep rolling.

With the short amount of sunlight here we trap in the dark on both ends of a productive day. Good headlight a must!
