Seems like the starting point of some tough negotiations to me ! Something the last administration was incapable of at any level !
First step in getting cost of living reduced is to manipulate fuel prices. Transportation costs have skyrocketed probably the single largest contributing factor.
You don’t reduce fuel prices by shutting down the most efficient transportation system of oil available on day 1. And you don’t try and cripple domestic oil production.

The article is a good read. I do wonder, though, do the same global attitudes and ideals exist today as they did when the article was written in 2020. I am not an economist or have a good grasp of international trade but, it seems to me, if every trading partner wants to get more bang for their buck (which is their job) at the expense of its citizens, I don't see where trade will be considered "fair" by all parties.
Everyone will need to compromise.

What’s everyone thoughts on having tariffs placed on goods from Mexico, Canada and China?
It will be interesting to see what goods get the tariffs placed on them or maybe all imports from these countries will have tariffs imposed.
I certainly am not looking forward to having to pay more for my fresh produce or every thing we get from China.
Your thoughts. Will they work? It's dumb and it's going to raise the price of most of what we buy. Trump is an idiot, not a single clue in his head. Enjoy the higher prices! We need to bring manufacturing back to the USA.Not too smart depending on a communist country that hates us,,, for most of our drugs and medical supplies.

I think one of the reasons for the tariffs with Mexico and Canada is to slow down the number of illegal immigrants Mexico and Canada are letting into the US. Mexico especially, might think twice and not be so anxious to get these immigrants through their southern borders and into our country if it hurts their trade with the US. They let them in because they don't want them in their country either.

Explain this then Last time Trump hit China, Mexico and Canada with new trade tariffs, inflation went........Down.. Guess you weren't paying attention enough the last 8 years as to who and what caused the inflation.

Walmart is not taking a hit at the moment but all the stuff Sam Walton did to grow walmart is no longer in play. Its my Opinion that that sometime in the not so distant future a rival will appear and walmart will be about as common as Kmart.

When these topics come up it's clear who has actually ran a business and who hasn't.
We need a 20 year plan to teach America to work with there hands again not knee jerk pandering. We don't have 20 years but your right! We have just experienced an attack on this great country by the CCP, first with the crud then by the invasion of illegals along with the drugs. It was caused by corrupt politicians. The cost of which has taken our debt into the twilight zone! Now we have to dig our way out of HIGH INSURANCE Costs due to the invasion, packed hospitals and doctors quitting. teachers who cant speak the languages of the students and left leaning mayors, governors and more corrupt politicians, and labor market that has found a way to survive on unemployment and welfare! Tariffs thats easy!

Stuff from china is junk. I will pay more for something that is well made and will last a long time with minimal maintenance. Stuff that used to be made in the USA was top. I remember when Made in japan was synonymous with junk. Today Japanese products are for the most part superior albeit more expensive. It seems like for a while it was a race to the bottom to make cheaper throw away stuff I despise the throw away society. More expensive stuff is not a bad thing if it means better quality for me.

I am cautiously supportive of the tariff on the basis of it being a regressive tax.
Our tax system is highly progressive. Not only do the lower income brackets not pay in, they're often getting a negative tax rate because of the refundable credits. There's a lot of fuss about wealthy people paying their "fair share" while apparently many people's fair share is not paying in anything.
The tariff would be a regressive tax, since lower income people pay a higher percent of their income on the type of things that will be hit by the tariff.
So overall it would be a step towards a more level tax code.
It also encourages domestic production, which is good for American jobs.
The gov. is going to get money from somewhere. This source is less bad IMO than the current focus on income tax.
Trump is also talking about cutting taxes. So if he succeeds in adding this regressive tax and cutting (something, anything) in the traditional set of progressive taxes, the net result would be something closer to a flat tax. RIGHT ON, THANK YOU!
