Just curious to what smarter people than me figure will happen to our fur market if retaliatory tariffs are imposed on goods we export (including fur)? I'm mainly thinking of China of course, which I believe is still the dominant player on the international fur market scene.

This is assuming that Trump makes good on his promise to levy heavy tariffs on incoming Chinese goods.

Just the threat has now brought two of the three to the table.

Remember he was president for 4 years before and imposed tariffs don't think it affected the fur market.

Always the optimist, I'm hoping for the best.

If memory serves, China punished American farmers with stiff tariffs on pork and soybeans among other things last time out?

I doubt there is enough need or want in our country for steady use of fur, for any market to get hurt on tariffs to it !

Trump is working a whole lot sooner and much quicker in action on many aspects of his cabinet weeks before he even takes office like last time, maybe he learned a lesson about needing do more with less talk and stop listening to others he left in position, who came back and stabbed him in the back !

His attitude towards his position is much different as well, just throwing the word tariff's out has half the world uneasy, including our own, as it should !!

It won't go down much, it is already in the bottom row. I spoke to a good friend that has been buying fur for 45 years that I have known him. He is still buying, he says it is dead. $25 averages on the best coyotes in MT, Less then $10 on 3XL and up coon, he said beaver are dead. It was dead before Trump was elected.

I was referring to potential retaliatory tariffs on American fur going to China.

The chinese gotta be scratching their heads over how north americans can produce wild animal pelts so cheap. They gotta be thinking, we couldn't produce pelts that cheap with child or slave labor?

OK, I gotcha. I guess I can imagine a blanket retaliatory tariff on all American exports to China.

It's because trapping is fun, even though it's often hard work, so people do it even though they could make more doing most anything else, with less work.

Some times you have to look at reality. Improve is about all that is possible. But I don't think it will happen this year. In reality, there is no fur market. Even the trapper sales are becoming a trinket and craft sales.
