get that stuff off your back and in a sled
sorry can't help you on bars , I have never owned one not home made. I usually use a sled but I'm trying out this setup since it's pretty light and I also don't have to drag a sled. It's an Andy Weiser beaver bag with a 5 or 6 gallon square bucket in the middle and it has just enough room on the sides for my axe handle and shovel. I can fit probably 1.5 dozen stoploss victors in the bucket and then I use a carabiner to keep the chains out of the mess. It worked good today.

If you're on ice, you can drag a sled a lot easier than carrying a pack unless you had to walk through a lot of rough ground to get to the ice. Even with the drain hole on that bag, if you ever go under the ice with that thing on, its gonna make it a lot harder to get back out because it will act like a drift sock. Put the bag in the sled .

Put the bag in the sled good advice. its going to happen again if you keep trapping rats and or beaver on ice. getting caught in your own beaver trap out on the ice can be bad too. you can drill a hole in the end of a 4-5 inch long 1 inch dowel. cut the head off a 20d nail. Glue the nail in the hole in the dowel rod. Leave about an inch and a half sticking out. Put a pair in your coat pocket. If its over your head you can get a dowel in each hand with the nail protruding out the bottom of your fist. Use it to help you get back up on the ice.

I have two spud bars. One is 3/8 rebar and the other is 1/2 inch. Both have a blade (flat stock) welded and sharpened on the bottom and a "T" tube welded on the top to put a rope through. I'll get a picture of it later and repost

And for safety. Please wear a pair of ice picks around your neck. You'll never know they're there but if you get in serious trouble. They're a lifesaver

The biggest advantage of the sled is you are spreading your weight out on thin ice. It has nothing to do with how easy it pulls for me. I like a ice chisel with a wood handle for new ice. I carry it in my hand full time and can check the ice thickness as I go. The last thing I want is a heavy steel chisel for new ice. You don't need the weight. After a while you will learn what ice holds you by how hard and how many times you have to hit it to punch through. You can check ice with a ax too. I always had both along. If I can swing my ax with one hand from over head and not go through, clear ice will hold me. I spent a lot of time on new ice with water shallow enough it would not go over my hip boots and it made the learning curve much shorter. I was ot scared to fall in. I wore hip boots ice trapping even when the ice was thick to help stay dry when kneeling at a house. The ice is often thinner at the houses and runs due to rat activity.

Jiffy “ Mille Lacs” 2 piece spud bar . It’s nice that it breaks down and the chipping end has steps helping shape holes.

It wouldnt have worked good if that water was over your head. If you think today scrambled your brain, add in going over your head. Between the shock of the water temp and the however many pounds strapped to your back plus filling up a set if waders with an ice cold 60-80 pounds, youre screwed. Get that thing off your back. Ice picks always. Every year seems like some idiot dies somewhere around the tri-state area on early ice and somehow its always an “experienced” ice fisherman who “knows” the ice. I cant think of a much more avoidable way to die other than going through ice.
