I normally set trails but with few if anybody trapping there is a surplus of critters. Trails are beat down with few real established trails. That's why I'm looking at boxes. I salvaged 6 sheets of 4 ×8 plywood today ready to build possum boxes.

I used to run between 75 & 100 boxes with 220's and once the dog proof came out I haven't used a box since. As far as I'm concerned the D/P is far and above the box a lot less work and better results.

Yep!
I use a box in certain situations. The few boxes I have just stay for the next year.

Where i live the coon move into the corn at the milk stage by the time season opens they're porked up and don't move much trapping standing corn in Nov. is a waste of time first warmup in dec. they move but if you see tracks on a location you missed the boat then theres a spurt around Christmas if it warms up and those are old boars

Do you have big cottonwood trees there? If so I'd set around those trees.

We have restrictions on body grip set back, depending on the size of the box, the time of year and what type of land it is.

I used to rub a few boxes and did OK, then I got the following advice and my catch more than doubled on the boxes

1. Raise the bottom up 2 or 3 inches
2. Screen on the back - 1/4" or 1/2" hardware cloth
3.Use PANS instead of triggers - I have caught coons by head and both front legs, like they were diving in head first
4.If not using pans, make the trigger wires into a big L and slide to the corner of the jaw
5, FREE LUNCH -put some bait on the outside of the box for the coons to get a free taste, then they are more eager to go in box

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure

Had the same problem this year and on all the plots I set for coon. From boxes to dp's. Plus some 220's in their trails also.

Those are nice deep slots. Do you set the trap all the way forward?

this is probably the best set up the deeper the slot the less chance of a dog sticking his head in plus less leg catches on raccoons also remember that if the coni is at the way at the back of the slot the trap will jump fprward
