A $102 room costs $120 after they tack on lodging tax. Is that about the norm? I see Connecticut has the highest at 15% plus the Feds impose a tax on motel rooms also in every state.

When we rent an RV in Anchorage Alaska there is an 8% Municipal Tax and 3% State Tax.

Interesting....here the municipalities can charge up to 4% so RVs must be allowed a higher rate.

Bryce

it varies by city not all charge it as much
everywhere it is the 5% state tax
some have a 0.5% county tax
then the city or municipality may have a lodging tax

a room in
LaCross will run you 15% tax
in West Salem 10.5% tax
Onalaska 13.5%
Holmen 10.5%

The locals voted that tax in to get free cash out of the transients and non residents.

Try Airbnb. Last I looked, they still collect the he state tax, but not the city lodging tax.

staple groceries in WI have no tax for the consumer at the grocery store.

fruit , veg , meat , bread, pasta,

looking at my grocery receipt from right before hunting I paid $331.31 total $1.91 in tax that was on my ziplock bags , Aluminum foil , and some containers.

State line grocery stores like the Beloit WI Woodman's offers a 8%-9% discount for driving a few miles over the border depending on what city you come from in IL.
they have a line many days for gas , lower price and 14 cents a gallon less in tax

Taxing travelers and tourist is a popular tax and easy to sell. Essentially, you are taxing someone else rather than the members of your community. Everyone likes a tax that someone else pays.

you are not wrong , but another way to look at it

your are a township of 1500 people mostly farms , a few churches , a few bars and an exit on the interstate

you have a volunteer fire district with 2 pumpers ,2 water trucks add 2 brush trucks that you share with 2 other townships

now you get a 4 story 80 room hotel at that exit that when full increases the number of people in your township by 20%

your ems calls , police calls go up , you need fire equipment to deal with an evacuation of a 4 story hotel when a 2 story house and a barn were the biggest thing you had before.

you need some way for the town to pay for providing those services.

so a room tax is often the most agreeable way to do that.
