Caught a muskrat in a bottom edge set yesterday along with a frog. I know muskrats will eat clams and mussels under certain scenarios but still am scratching my head in wonderment. Either the rat was transporting the frog to a safe place to have a meal or did a dead frog get pushed downstream by the current, get lodged against the trap jaws and get caught between them when the muskrat triggered the 150. Either way it was a first for me, after trapping thousands of muskrats in my lifetime. Last year I got a muskrat and a corncob together in a 330 at same time in a beaver bank den. In trapping I've learned to expect the unexpected!

That's awesome Walt. Strange things sure do happen when you're out there all the time. I had a mink years ago in a pocket set that had a partially eaten muskrat in it's jaws and it never let go while drowning. This was way back before cell phones so don't have a picture.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

That is a cool catch.Muskrats are omniverous, they eat meat as well as vegetation.
They are also cannibalistic, and female rats are know to eat their own newborn under certain circumstances.
A good bait in late fall for muskrats is half a muskrat.

That's right Boco. I think that's "part" of the reason you catch so many at pocket sets baited with muskrat relatives.

An old timer told me that years ago and I found it to be true.

I caught a buck mink in one of my ADC 160 wood chuck traps. The neat thing was all I saw was a large garter snake protruding from the chuck hole and when i pulled the trap a mink was in the trap with the snake in its mouth.

I caught a female bob cat In a 330 with hen mallard still clutched in its mouth.

I was checking this this cat snare I had set on a beaver dam, and it led out into the water and was pulled tight. When i garbed it, it pulled back. In that snare was 20lb snapper caught right around the neck.
I've caught lots of fish in BGs and colony traps.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

That's efficiency at its finest, and colony traps are always exciting to check.

I never use them for bait in a marten box.
They attract other flyers.
I send them on their last flight far away from the trap the odd time I catch one.
Some use them suspended inside a cat cubby as a lure holder/sight attractor it does work in a pinch if you run short of beaver carcass

Years ago I had a 1.5 coilspring just downstream of a bridge near Ruston, Louisiana. Heavy rain one night, next morning I pulled the trap, which was sprung with a condom in the jaws. Whomever was wearing it must have pulled out.
