Been doing fishing trips to Costa Rica for the last several years but this year my son can’t miss school long enough to make a CR trip happen so I’ve booked flights to Puerto Rica for 5 days without my son. Anyone ever been? Haven’t made any other arrangements yet. What did you do and where did you go?

I spent a week there a few years ago after the hurricane doing storm cleanout in Arecibo. Ate a lot of really good food. The Old San Juan area is really fun. The two forts are really interesting and there are a lot of shops and restaurants to visit. You can go on a guided iguana hunt. That's what I would do if I ever went back.

Ditto what Ross said. People are friendly, but I'd carry my wallet in my front pocket. Locals recognize visitors (like any foreign place) and just ensure you're not putting an unneeded target on yourself.

If I had an extended stay, I'd get away from San Juan and check out the mountains. Make sure you try mofungo (sp?) for lunch or dinner.

I spent a year there. The rain forest, El yunque national forest is worth seeing. Bioluminescent bay. There's kayak tours of the bay. There are Zip line tours near the rain forest. Old San Juan and the fort are very interesting. Traffic is a nightmare every where. If a restaurant isn't open during before 5:00 pm it usually means it's not licensed. My favorite side dish was the mamposteao rice. Most of the restaurants are very good. The neighborhood bakeries usually have a good breakfast.
