I have a few otter that I want to get tanned I am going airing on the cites tags to arrive. My question is how long will an otter hide last in a freezer before it gets freezer burned? Should I leave it whole until I am ready to send it off to the tannery? Also how should I wrap this up to put it in the freezer. Just a trash bag, plastic bag wrap in newspaper - I have no idea a would appreciate your help as these are the first few otter I have ever caught.

Thank You

I would skin and roll up with fur out in the freezer if your not going to skin, flesh and dry on a stretcher.

I will only be skinning it as I have another guy going to finish it. How long will it last in the freezer before freezer burn and also do I wrap it in newspaper or just put it in a plastic bag/trash bag?

There was a thread on the fur handling forum about this not long ago.

Fur in, tuck the tail in, roll up nose first. Seemed to be the "consensus."

I've caught Spring muskrats for a few years straight after our local auction took place. I'd skin them, leave fat on, roll up fur out, put them in plastic bags, flesh and stretch them the next Fall and bring to the next auction. Nobody could tell they were last years catch.

Unfleshed otters hold up very well in a deep freezer.

I have a couple that I skinned, flipped fur out, and rolled them up starting at the face. Then into a bag and in the freezer. I've always just fleshed and boarded them as I get them, but I want to frost scrape these ones and it's been too warm

You will be better off to flesh, board and dry the skins then keep them in the freezer until ready to sell ship or tan.
If you want to keep the skins in the freezer, dampen the leather side with a spray bottle of water, turn the skins fur out and roll them up in a sturdy plastic bag, squeeze the air out of the bag before tying it up.

I always store all unfinished furs in the freezer fur out, with no flesh exposed. Put in a plastic bag and squeeze the air out (bread bags work well) and they will last quite a long time without freezer burn. It depends on the animal somewhat how long they will last, but an otter stored this way will be good for a year or two without freezer burning. I've never kept one longer, I always put mine up at the end of the season, but I did an otter that a guy gave me that had been in the freezer a couple years this way and it wasn't freezer burnt any. If I was going to keep them over a year I would look at vacuum packing them.
