Picked up one of these to have around in case power goes out .... And we run out of gas some how lol..and just to have to use in some of the more drafty parts of the house from time to time. Never had one that I can remember but read the instructions put it together and pretty dang easy with the lil electric start all in all. Anyhow, y'all got any tips past common sense stuff ( don't put it near highly flammable stuff , no air tight spaces ect get carbon monoxide monitors ect) for a new kerosene heater owner ?

We had a different style growing up and I remember putting up a blanket in the doorway of the family room to keep the heat in. We would cook on top of it. Grilled cheese and such. I was too young to tell you how it operates but I can distinctly remember the smell of it in my mind

Always use #1 clear kerosene
The dyed stuff will kill your wick in a few tank fulls

Lots of homes have burned down because someone put gasoline in the heater.

They claim to be oderless , but not really, claim to be safe indoors, maybe? but I wouldn't use it in a tight house or bedroom. I didn't think they still made those, was a fad in the 80's but died out. Kerosun was a big name then.
A CO detector is a good idea, they do put out good heat, but it's an open flame so be careful.

I knew some folks one time that used one of those to get by one winter. I'm not sure if something was wrong with it or it was just the way they work but any time they let it run out of fuel it would send out a lot of black stuff in the air. Unfortunately for them they would often let it run out at night and most everything in their living room was covered in black crud.

The wick height is what controls your burn, if it's too sooty you need more wick

@ $5.00 + /gal. Kerosene isn't a cheap heating oil. And not readily available in bulk in most areas.

Yep. Been awhile since I have seen #1 kerosene for sale. They work. Make your house and all your clothes, and you, have an unpleasant smell.

I dont believe they are dangerous. (with some common sense. never heard of one killing anybody) Trapping a big ranch in the NE sandhills a few years ago had a shed to stay in. Slept on my camping bed. Cooked on my coleman stove. Had a fridge/freezer. Had access to a shower. Heated the shed with one of those. Was a big shed. 24X24. No problem staying warm. There is a smell though.

Still see lots of folks buying kero here, lots of gas stations have kero pumps

Don't use it much anymore, but have a good bit in the past.

I always lit it outside, and let it get hot.
Then brought it inside.
Carried back out to shut off, seemed to really reduce odor.

Never had an issue, but never left it unattended, and usually only burned it for an hour or two first thing in am and last thing in pm.

Still have 3 or 4 of them around, picked up for free.

LOL, burned the last of my Y2K kero stash about 5 years ago...

I use one in my fur shed. Been around the family since the early 80’s I think cause I remember it in the basement when I was a kid. Not cheap heat though just kinda neat to me. I can still get kerosene bulk about 10 miles away but even though cheaper then buying the expensive jugged kerosene at the local farm store it’s still not cheap. I had to put a new wick in it couple years ago

I have one just like it. I have used it in my shop/fur shed/garage and for emergency heat in my house. No problem using dyed Kerosene for me. Had it 20 plus years and on 2nd wick. Don't let it run out of fuel. Turn it down after starting like the directions say. Make sure the wick fully retracts when you shut down by checking the knob rotated fully CCW. Burning kerosene gives off lots of H2O just like propane, so just like an unvented propane heater that H2O goes into the heated space. I would get some kind of fireproof mat to go under it in the house to catch incidental fuel leaks. Like someone else said, you can cook on the top of it. Brush off the dust if it has been sitting around a while or it will stink things up for a bit with the first burn. Get one of these to make refueling easier:

a friend growing up 80s his family's had Kerosene heaters in every room of the house.
they moved to WI for his dads job from TN not many other people I knew had them.
they had bought a house with electric heat which was popular for a few years in the late 70s then electric prices must have gone up because no one in WI that hadn't moved from some where else wanted eclectic heat.

a bit of an oder but they worked they even had 2 fireplaces in the house but they didn't cut wood.

they would get a 55 gallon barrel of K1 and put it in the basement and fill them down there that was where most of the smell was.

I am not really sure it was ever cheap heat but it definitely costs a lot now.

not a bad choice for emergency heat but not really a good all the time heat source.

after it is out and cool cover it in a sheet to keep the dust off

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I heated an 8’ x16’ sleeper fish house for 8 years with a smaller one. There are some tricks to them. Never let it run out of fuel inside as they produce odor then. It’s best to light it outside, let it get to temperature and quit smoking and then move it inside.

Water is the enemy.
WHEN it gets into the wick,
you need a new wick.

We had two of the older style, the black ones with no cage, back in the early 80's that we used to help heat our drafty, old stone farmhouse. One night one of them ran out of fuel and put out a lot of soot. Everything, including me and the wife had a film on us.

I still have one of the newer types like yours. I use it to heat the fur shed at my camp, works pretty good.

Eh...wot?
