I would probably get a .25 springer or a 22 PCP gun. Hopefully your not walking in on your line because airguns are very heavy compared to their firearm equivalents

First rule of using them for hunting/trapping purposes is not to use alloy pellets.

To be legal in MO right away trapping, not able to use firearm. Was thinking about getting a pellet gun also. Have seen them dispatch coyote but dont know what type or brand gun they used.

Any of the wally world springers will work up to coyotes. I have an older diana 34 which is really not even a magnum springer in .22 and it will get it done. Not all pellets are equal though, you want a harder one for penetration not the softer lead that mushrooms. I use crosman premiers as they are cheap and harder than most.

Nice thing about air rifles is that they are not firearms. Here in Wisconsin we have to be 50ft from the centerline of the road to shoot a firearm. An air rifle doesn't have that restriction since it's not a firearm. A trapper can set closer to the road and dispatch with no restrictions.

Why not trap further from the road? The only set I've ever made near a road is putting conibears in culverts, or marten boxes near logging roads, so I'm genuinely just asking why. Just seems live animals held next to the road is asking for problems.

Many of these culverts are fur funnels. Conibear rules vary widely state by state. Some people are old/crippled and trapping close to the vehicle is necessary. Lots of roads where I live you never see a vehicle. Some states you can legally trap ditches without land owner permission. Etc...

Gotcha, just a very different world. I trap some otter near roads just because it lets me get out a volume of sets on different waterways that I'd never be able to accomplish on a snow-go or snowshoes. But that's exclusively submerged conibears, so dispatching isn't happening. I don't know that we have a set distance (that I've ever been aware) that we can discharge a firearm from the road, just not from, towards, or along any publicly maintained road. In theory if you're off the maintained road surface and shooting away from the road, you're legal. Lots of guys get in trouble for it and AWT sets up fake animals for idiots to shoot at from their trucks lol

I've never done it, but it is an option.

.22 caliber should be sufficient but i would be looking for a .25 for the added thump

For those using an airgun do you earhole or heart?

When I was younger I dispatched lots of critters including coyotes and bobcats with a Benjamin break over .22 caliber air rifle. Also shot plenty with a Sheridan .20 caliber pump air rifle. Both shot roughly 900 fps. Killed them all stone cold. Point blank shot to the dome and it’s over. The Sheridan would actually shoot through a pine 1x4 at point blank. That’s all I needed to see.

I've been using a .177 caliber Gamo pellet gun for the last 2 seasons. Rated at 1,200 FPS, which is faster than a .22 short. (1,045 FPS) Has done well for me on everything from Racoon to Coyote...1 shot and Over...

Yes, pellet antimony and placement are everything. With 177 or 22 you can walk into any walmart and get a tin of 500 for 7 bux and change. Any bigger calibers you will have to order and they are a lot more expensive. I like the quiet aspect of it. Airgun nation has a forum with tons of information if you want to go down that rabbit hole but you don't have to spend an insane amount of money like some do.
