I've been saving mink for a blanket for a couple years, it's a long game. The missus wants a beaver fur blanket, but I know that'll be too hot unless we forgo the wood stove entirely so I'm gonna try mink (whenever I have about 200 of them)

King size jet black full hair beaver speed
Queen leopard dyed muskrat spread
Queen mohair goat spread
Full silver raccoon
Lynx w/arctic fox trim throw
Natural sheared beaver throw
Mixed fox pieces throw
Marten pieces throw
Fisher w/otter trim throw

All bought on EBay or thrift stores over the years and are in great shape still except the 45 yr old sheared beaver is getting a little weak in the seams. I held out a little too long bidding on a beautiful skunk spread and sadly missed out. Also passed on a king polar bear spread at a consignment shop because was unsure of the legality of buying/ owning it in MN, really regretted that one. There is an amazing amount of beautiful second owner finished fur out there if you look for it.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

My wife made this one,,, I tanned the fur and she did the rest,,, she’s very talented with a sewing machine,,
Unfortunately she lost sight last year in one of her eyes so she’s trying to adjust,,,the next project is a beaver blanket,,, the beaver is already tanned,,,

Nice fir.

How well do they hold up if you have to wash them?

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure no washing. They can go back to a furrier/dry cleaner type deal

Yeah I was just curious, b/c it seems like things like hats & bed spreads sometimes need washing

My sister has a queen sized plucked and sheered beaver bedspread cut out in a square pattern like that. I contributed the beaver, I think 16 as I remember.
She has had problems with it in the corners where the leather was too thin by the back end. I would do one diamond pattern if it was me.

There’s one on Etsy for a pretty decent price and they have good reviews but it ships from Greece and they don’t accept returns. Makes me a little leary.

I wouldn’t do that. Lots to go wrong. If it gets held up in customs you’ll be paying a pile to get it out and probably have to hire an agent.

For reference on the current price of the one at the auction link above ^^^ typically someone will charge you around $25 per SF to sew a fur blanket. A king size bedspread is 70 square feet or better. California king is even bigger. That means just the cost to have one made out of your own fur will be north of $1800. Then add in the pelts it would take, the tanning cost for those pelts, shipping, etc.

A king size fur blanket made out of your own fur would be $2500 or more

Gotta live up to the nickname...
