My original post was about a knocking noise I was hearing periodically at start up. This is a 2019 Tundra. Well my truck was at the dealership for six weeks. They said they were unable to duplicate the noise. They mentioned that the oil filter I had on was an aftermarket filter. They suggested replacing it as aftermarket components are rarely made to OEM specifications. I asked them to replace it and I would pick up the truck. They didn’t charge for the filter or their time. I have not heard the noise since I got the truck back. So if anyone else is using aftermarket filters and hearing knocking, put on origin equipment parts.

I've never heard of such a thing causing an engine knock. I can't imagine that it was so plugged up that it starved the top end of oil. Did you notice unusually high oil pressure at startup?

No. The aftermarket filter was new. I believe the OEM filter is designed to not allow the return of oil from the top end after the vehicle is turned off. Unless the dealership fixed something else and didn’t tell me. But I highly doubt that.

So they couldn’t duplicate the issue when the aftermarket filter was still installed? One of them thing that make you say "hummmm"

My 2019 Tacoma had a dashboard engine warning light go on and it felt like it was hesitating just a bit. I plugged my code reader in and looked up several potential causes for the code. One was a faulty o2 sensor and another was a faulty gas cap. I used rubbing alcohol to clean the old gas cap and the threads of the filler hole. That solved the problem. It's been a couple years and I still haven't replaced the gas cap like I originally intended. With all the sensors and computerized everything you just don't know what's going on sometimes.
In some ways I miss the old days where it was just fuel and spark, or timing, if you had both fuel and spark. But these vehicles are much more comfortable and dependable and last so many more miles I should not complain.
United we stand.

Your mechanic knows what he is talking about. I have had the same thing happen, when I bought a few "after market" oil filters at a liquidation sale. If you have an oil gauge on your vehicle it will tell you there is a difference in oil filters. The paper in them is rated in microns by the flow rate , or amount of oil that can be forced through them at certain pressure. Just because the filter will "fit" doesn't mean the flow rate/ paper inside them is correct for your engine, especially during extreme cold. There are reasons for the flow rates in modern engines and reasons why they are designed for synthetic oil and ever changing, lower viscosity oils. Contact Toyota and they will tell you whether you should be running synthetic oil, and if your engine was designed to have it.

Unless that filter was plugged full and starving your valves for oil that shouldn't make any difference. All filters are the same, they just get painted different colors and put in different boxes, but Donaldson, Baldwin, and Wix make 90% of what's on the market, even if it says Toyota, GM, Ford, etc. Caterpillar being the exception here, they actually make their own filters. Most likely you were hearing your valve lash out of adjustment or lifter knock Nah, all filters aren't even close to the same, irregardless of how few manufacturers. Only a handful might produce them, but they are made to varying specifications. Someone on TacomaWorld bought about 10 different oil filters for the Tacoma and cut each in half. Inspected the number of pleats, the material the pleats were made of and took great photos. I am confident now that they arent the same...and for the record, the OEM toyota filter had the most pleats and appeared the highest quality...Ill stick with them.

I bought filter blocks for my 6.7L that converted it to CAT filters, and I ran with that idea and made some other's to fit all my trucks (except my 1985.5 Toyota, it doesn't care)

Toyota OEM filters are great. I used to buy them from the dealership when I would change my oil. No more expensive than a fram. They are better and will build more pressure. In the old Toyotas if the oil psi light came on, you probably weren’t using a Toyota filters.

Most likely you were hearing your valve lash out of adjustment or lifter knock Far from true in my experience . My shop had changed filter brands 4-5 times over the years and with one line I had 3 cars come back with low oil pressure 100% because of the filter. When the local parts store changed brands, I did too. They would come in and take my stock and exchange to the new line. I forget the line name but remember the sales pitch of, " they're the same as Purolator" First car the oil light blinked at idle after I changed the oil. Thinking the pickup screen probably clogged I pulled the pan. Clean as a whistle, so after thinking about it and talking to other mechanics I put a different brand filter on. Bingo! Had 2 more cars come back with same problem that were done before this one.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I brought my truck in twice for this issue. They had it three weeks the first time six weeks the second. They said they couldn’t duplicate it. It happed three times to me between visits. I even have video of the noise at start up. That is why they kept it so long the second time. They said they checked the oil pressure at start up and didn’t see anything off. I’m just hoping that it doesn’t happen again. Still deciding if I want to keep such a temperamental truck or not.
