!0+years ago I pd. 20 dollars an hour for baling hay onto wagons. Most often had to wait for my wife to get off work . LMAO! In 1962 I got paid $.75/hr baling hay taking it off the baler and stacking 7 high on the wagon ALONE! LMAO! Ah the memories! Sounds like we worked for same farmer minimum 125 bales per wagon

Learned a long time ago the takers never get enough , and the givers always lose. Takers never repay , so if they need money, I give them something to earn it! Seldom costs me anything.

Same old, same old. I've had guys beg me for work and take an early lunch and never come back. Had a 40 year old guy, said he cut 10 cords of wood a year, liked to work out, had work boots, etc, he made it 30 mins pulling brush. Doing everything by the book and legal I figure it cost $200 to hire someone before they even start, then they can't even make it a hour, what a joke. Back when was doing tree work with my cousin we started one job at daylight and finished it and had a guy meet us at the next one. Worked him untill he was dragging paid him off and had another guy that had expressed wanting to work there within 2 hrs. Worked him but when I got to the ground and watch him I saw signs of near heat related issues. Got him som iced down drinks and sat him in the shade untill it look like he was OK. Pais him and sent him home. My cousin and I finished up the day at dark. People just don't want to or could not handle the work. that was about 15 years ago. Today my cous6 has people all the time tell him to call them when they Ned help with his mobile welding and repa6 business. But he will call every one of then and none will come out for $25 an hour. I go help him when I'm off or between shifts sometime even when I only have 8 hrs between shifts. I won't let him pay me. I Love the work and enjoy hanging out with him and I don't need the money at all. I tell him to put it back into building his business.( He only started it about a year and a half ago). Fellow I work with complains about not having money. He has the same job and opportunities for overtime as I do but never works any. last year made more than 2x what he did and he says man it must be nice? I pointed out he had the same ability to work as I do at the same rate and has several years seniority on me . He only makes weak excuses.

I put up hay early 1970s for 1.75 an hour and got up to 2.25. Younger kids started asking 3.00 and farmers wouldn't pay it. That's when the big round balers came out.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

This is the way it is for some. My one daughter’s boyfriend is a workaholic, diesel/fleet mechanic. The other kids boyfriend is a psychology student. Both around +/- 20yds old. The lazy one asked when he saw me answer my phone “How long are you on call for?” I says “24/7 for 7 days, then 24/7 if I want to pay off my mortgage by 55 and buy cool stuff” He says “after about 8 hours of work I’m pretty much useless” I tell him “Well, you’re honest, I’ll give you that!” It’s going to come to a head when I walk in and he’s sitting on the couch eating my chips watching some gay show. Wife is nervous because I usually don’t super coat stuff when I’m ticked…lol. But I blame his parents. Mom was accounting but quit, too stressful, dad lives off church money. I hope daughter ditches that boat anchor after university cuz he’s just going to be a leach and drag her down. Laziness really grinds my gears!

For those feeling nostalgic, we start baling hay around 1st of June. Small squares. Labor gets 60 cents per bale. With my equipment, they can do about 150 bales per hour. Crew of 2, if they get after it, can make $45 per hour. Crew of 3 can make $30 per hour, pretty easy. Hard part is stacking in the barn. Some of best help has been girls, but they had horses and know the value of the hay they are hauling. Hauling hay not that bad if you have the right equipment and right attitude. For those who will haul hay, biggest problem I have is working around their schedule. Hay is ready to bale on Thursday. They have a soccer match on Thursday.
What most who have ever put hay in a barn never realize is the people that hired you to put that hay in the barn are the ones who have to feed it. Sell about 150 bales a year to a lady down the road and she is the one dragging those bales out.........and she is at least 75 years old. In fact, most of the hay I sell is fed by girls and women.

Worked 2 summers for a custom baler back in the mid 80’s. First year we got 0.15/bale. Next year 0.18/bale. A friend, one of my older brothers and I would regularly do 1000+ bales of hay per day. Stacked on wagon and transported and stack in barn. We would split the money so basically 0.05/0.06 per bale per person.

Hire , or try to get someone to help with odd jobs, around the home, is not worth it. Painting garage couple years back, asked couple HS seniors, and they responded, had to ask there parents, first. Hired a 15 yr., old to help clean the garage out and help wash scrub floor, to stain floors. Got about 4 hrs. out of him told me his legs got to sore. There real good about saying how long will it take, then say can we have advance.

When you interview a new hire when they say do not drug test me, our society has a big problem!

Few months back I get a text from a guy wanting 20 bales of hay for his goats. Says he is sending some of his work guys out and they will bring cash. Also says they don't speak English so if any problem, text him and he will translate.
Three young Spanish speaking lads show up in a work van. I show them the hay bales........which they had never seen before. Even so, 20 bales flew into that van like they wanted to go in there. They were gone in 60 seconds.
There is a reason people like hiring those guys.
