As more and more take the same approach, the mutilation has to be more extreme to be noticed. It is a downward spiral, a race to the bottom that gains momentum as it goes. I think also perhaps the lack of in person interaction in today's electronic age has reinforced the need to be visually unique.

We have hired young people and they are basically the same person, multiple tattoos, spend time doodling reminders because they’re “artistic”, they say ASMR all the time and other new catch phrases that I don’t care to search definitions of. They are so consumed with being different that there’s nothing really special about them because they’re all body doubles
