My suggestion is to first buy a multiple subject notebook to record each load for each caliber that you load , then write in how you like or dis like each one . With a date , weight of powder and which powder used , primer and so on . And keep it close to your reloading bench for easy references .
You're friend along the snare line . Allan

That's a good tip. Helps you to keep from repeating the same mistake twice. I keep the better targets with the load, range etc. A log would be better though. You get to playing around with different loads, you'll figure out what works for you, then they won't change. 26.8 of H335 and 55 grain sp for .223. Or 37 of 3031 and 150 grain rn for .308..................on and on...............

For you reloaders........... I just put an order into Graf & sons, In the order was an 8# jug of smokeless powder and there was no hazmat fee. Not sure how long they're doing it? Or maybe I'm just special?
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I did this it works great but I had a load book for each cal. Then pipes burst and my load books got runt. I will never the rest of my life shoot as much as I used to or be able to replicate those records. I was having to set barrels back I was shooting so much just playing with different loads. So be sure to not only keep notes but maybe store them in a water tight container. I had got them out to look over and get info for a friend and placed then in spot right under where water lines ran.

Or maybe I'm just special? they put 4 8lb jugs in a box and is how I would order to get the most out of hazmat fees back when I used to shoot a little more than now. Something to keep in mind if you don't get such a good deal in the future. Then again I will probably never order like that again myself with how little I shoot these days I may never make another order in my life.

Each of us have our reasons for reloading. My reasons were set in motion the day I went looking to buy some ammo and found the shelves were bare. And stayed that way for months. Without ammo, a weapon is not much more than an expensive club to wave around, and not a very good one at that. So my primary motivation is not cost, nor bench rest level quality, but to assure myself and family members a reliable source of ammo to keep guns running hot. Nothing what needs plugging fails to get plugged for lack of means.
So I made the call to resume reloading and am now my own ammo factory. What I learned along the way was the most important factor in all of this is knowledge. If you know what you are doing, the most basic Lee press and equipment (not the scale) is capable of duplicating factory ammo or better. In addition to what others have said, there are three essential pieces of equipment nobody ought to be without. They are.......an accurate scale........a balance beam scale works fine. An accurate set of calipers............(and attachments to get the most out of them) and maybe most important of all..........a log book where everything you do is written down and documented.
One of the most curious things I've observed about reloaders is the total aversion they have for shooting somebody else's reloads. Some will flat out refuse to do it. So the problem then becomes some guy is sitting on a mountain of reloaded ammo, then something happens to him. It is left for family, friends or someone else to deal with. If you have a log book, and have documented it all, it is far less of a problem. It also helps you duplicate what you did sometime in the past.

Another benefit of reloading I never expected was in order to get the most out of my reloaded ammo, I've learned more about guns and shooting in past 4 years than all the rest of the time put together. That alone was worth the price of admission.

I dont like digital calipers. Lyman makes real nice easy to use dial caliper. Probably some real good digital ones out there but like digital scales the good ones are pricey.
I been doing it since the 70's. Acquiring stuff over time. When I started getting in to it ammo more accurate than factory was easy. Takes a little more effort now but tailoring a load to your rifle takes experimenting. Outside of competition weighing each charge exactly the same as the last one and finding the seating depth your rifle likes for the bullet you are shooting is pretty important. different powder and different bullets make a difference too.
Outside of competition ammo, My advice is to choose a good bullet and a powder that seems to be in the top 3 for velocity. You wont spend a thousand bucks looking for one hole groups stead of nickel size.
OP said deer at 600. Thats very doable if the shooter can do it. Modern rifles are lots better today. Used to be one or two would be tack drivers out of 4-5 with consecutive serial numbers. High end rifles all shot ok but a couple were heads above the rest. No matter how much you played with different loads. Getting a tack driver was luck of the draw.
Hodgdon has been leading the way with powders not as sensitive to temperature changes. I have not been playing with them as what I do works great for me. If I was starting out I would start with those powders.
The number one biggest reason I reload is versatility. Especially with shotguns. No more hunting all over 9 counties to find the shot shell or rifle ammo I want.
