I was wondering if people preferred the horse meat or the bobcat base?

Both work great if you’ve been using a lot of bobcat and beaver meat, the horse meat is a good change up I have found

Horse , IMO is a better choice, but why not get both and alternate.

Straight bobcat meat, IMO, is not a real good attractant. It's all the stuff you put in with it that makes it a good bait.

Early season, straight horse meat, only slightly aged, is a great bait and doesn't attract livestock.

His bait solution, which he won’t sell, is top of the line. Most solutions are nelson based formulas in one way or another. Regardless of the base meat, having and alternating different baits will produce interest consistently. After the first couple of visits at the set the curiosity is not as strong resulting in less working of the set. In my experience. Every location gets a baited dh and a flat set, with different bait or lure.

LT, Coyote Clayton, Flint and others. would it be safe to say that bait solutions have transformed bobcat, beaver, horse bait into a combination LURE?
I remember listening to a few bait and lure makers tell me what exactly goes into some of the highly regarded baits of today and with all of the extra smells
added it was like smorgasbord of lure/smells mixing in with the meat. To me there is no need to add a gland lure or urine to a set if using good bait today.
Let me hear your responses....

I have used both with great results. Down here I like to use horse meat on one set and cat on the other.I let the critter decide which one is the best. If I am setting an intersection I will use both on two different sets, and I have found that this hammers'em. Each animal is different and some days that like A, some days they want B. They have so much to eat down here year round that you need to mix it up to get them interested in working a set. I do the same with urine and glad, one set will be red fox, one bobcat, one coyote...

Get both, keep notes and find out which one works in your area.

A scent post set along the travel route, in the vicinity of the dh produces for me. Typically I set for the opposite wind direction that will occur. Good backing, mainly gland lure, turd, and a shot of urine. I would agree typical nelson formula without overpowering essence, is a collection of glands and skunk oil. The tainted meat in my opinion does add to it. A shot of urine after a catch seems to be effective. Makes me feel better anyway. Cleitis’s use of spoonbill oil takes the bait to a unique level.

Bobcat by itself doesn't get much reaction when I've tested it and I've tested it a lot. If you put just horse and just bobcat meat right beside each other down a deep dirt hole my experience is the horse will get worked harder 99.9% of the time. I do use some Bobcat in some formulations put up a specific way for a specific reason though.

People talk about individual coyotes preferring one attraction over another but in my testing I've found coyotes to be pretty consistent in their preferences if everything is equal based off side by side testing of different odors. Not saying individual coyotes can't lower their intrest level after repeated encounters with a certain odor or they can't associate danger with a certain odor after several catches have been made in the area on that odor. But with uneducated coyotes I've found their preferences to be similar across the board. Just something I've seen while testing that I thought I'd share, take it how ever you want.

Our records show beaver meat based baits are preferred 2-1. Over the years I have begun to see a marked shift to beaver meat developed based baits over cat meat based baits. I personally find beaver a much better bait overall in predator interest attraction. Cletis builds a good product any bait would be good IMO.

The cat and beaver meat based baits have a remarkable odor difference alone, simply due to their own physical makeup composition. I find both to be effective in my own use in the field. I agree many of the baits sold are built similarly these days.

I believe much of this trend has to due with each individuals success rate in the field and how skilled they are at what they do.

A few years ago when I was doing a lot of testing I did something IMHO you shouldn’t ever do when trapping, I put a dab of this bait on a grubstake! I might add that this is a horse-based bait. To the right the coyote encounters a smear of fox gland lure before it moves on it hits the bait scent and you can see the results. Notice, grubstakes are supposedly used for a chewing/eating response attraction LOL, maybe the video viewers can see if the coyote wanted to eat that bait. BTW, this bait and Coyote Creek Bait from O’G were my two top performing baits for years.

I prefer horse meat. I wish I could find a horse on the side of the road around here so I could play around with it as a base in my own formulations
