There are some new folks on here with some CR questions and I love this kind of weather for snaring coyotes in my warm season grass. I thought I would share a way for them to make pigtail support wires out of #9 black annealled wire.
Find a small 2x4 scrap, drill a 5/8" hole to stick a 5/8" bolt in. Then drill a hole beside it the size of the wire. [Linked Image]

Cut a piece of wire about 36" long. Put the bolt in the block, and then stick the wire in the small hole. It should be a couple inches deep. Wrap about 3 wraps and pull the bolt out. Ready for your 1/2" rebar stakes that also secures the snare swivel.

If you don't want to stake them with rebar and you want to use an earth anchor or a drag. You can punch a hole in frozen ground with a 3/8" piece of rebar and make this style of support wire very easily.

Easy to see that idea would make for a more efficient setting.

Good stuff, #9 annealed wire is the best support wire you can use IMO. That pigtail is a good way to use it! ,,, easier than my old vice grip method....

[Linked Image]

Sometimes it'll get loose and not provide as solid support as if you'd weld it on. I prefer they be welded above the washer these days like this one on a snare stake through a drowning rod for beaver...

We never seem to have the right soil conditions for that second method of snare support, it just never holds solid enough for me.

Good stuff guys. The more I learn to use snares right the more I like them.

Nice. Does bigger diameter pigtail work pretty well. I used a pole barn nail in a vice and wrapped #9 around it for the pigtail end. Smaller diameter. Pigtail holds the snare so no whammy is needed. I haven't tried them yet though.

I like it but it needs to be the black annealled and not hard galvanized. Wind and heavy snow doesn't move it. It's easier to get on and off a stake when it's loaded with mud. You can always squeeze it down to tighten it. They get flattened out and you will need to reshape it after a catch.

I do not like to anchor my snare next to the trail when snaring coyotes. I snare very open country and run 12-14 foot of cable, between my snare and an extension. I stake with rebar as far from the trail as I can get. I hang my loop and then stake, so I am as far as I can get away. I use a piece of number nine wire for a support. I lay it on the ground and about two and a half or three inches from the end I place a half in rod with a V or U slot cut in the end over the wire. I drive the wire in the froze ground with my three pound hammer about three inches. The wire folds up along each side of the rod and once it is in I pull the rod. I put the snare on the wire support with a J clip. It will crimp on tight enough you can twist the cable to what ever angle you want it. When you pull the snare, often you can not get the support wire out of the froze ground. I like to stake away from the trail so I can rehang a new snare with out moving the support wire. I caught three coyotes in two weeks in a eight foot wide grass strip between two stubble fields. The third one got a front leg through and wiped out the trail. They were crossing from one stubble field to another in the same spot, so I set it.

I just saw that driving the wire in with a wolf fang driver. Even on ice, great idea.

The U or V I cut in h half inch rod is just deep enough for the number nine wire to fit in. I used pig tails part of a year and didn't want the snare staked on the trail. I didn't want to drive two rebar stakes, so I went to nothing but wire for the support.

In pictures 6&7 spread the in the ground section and leave off the doubled back end of the support and it fill friction fit. No swiveling.
