Last year we had an ice rink that had a very rough surface. So we were gonna drill a hole in the ice and then pump water onto the ice to create a smooth surface. However, when we drill down two feet and still hadn’t hit water, we gave up.

Two foot of ice is nothing. I lived in Fairbanks and saw twice that. I have three foot plus in ND here often. I would say you don't play on the ice often.

It was also towards the biggining of winter, and it was roughly two feet. But we have also gotten as much as 4 feet of ice a few years ago.

And we play on the ice alot each year.
It doesnt matter if it is -50 or not, we still go iceskating.

-62 at the Darwin Ranch in Wyoming 1982. We were out checking Coyote and Marten traps and had to go back to the ranch to keep from freezing. I was living a couple miles away in Moran Wy. at that time. 1982 was the coldest winter since the thirties in Wyoming.

-98 is the Coldest ive ever checked traps. You need to take a step sideways every few seconds when peeing outside or you'd end up getting poked as the pee froze. Words became ice cubes and we would put them in our pocket to thaw out and have conversations later on at the cabin. Just kidding -48c ambient and -69 with the wind is the truth. I sunk a skidoo in -46 (-55 with wind) If i hadnt unhooked my sled and jumped in theres a good chance i wouldnt have made the walk to the cabin. Luckily i only got a little wet on the boots and outer ski pants. The water collected a lot of snow as it froze and i had to crawl up the river bank to reach my cabin which i had luckily already made a fire in. steps were getting very heavy on the 45 minute walk and it took a good hour or so to thaw my boots enough to take them off. Cold weather is dangerous because if SHTF theres no time outs or reset button.
