Found this strikemaster 40V pro "on sale" at a local sporting goods store. I have an auger for my drill but my batteries are getting older, still works but not able to drill as many holes. Anyone have any experience or comments on this auger (I did buy this one)

I have the regular 40 volt and it is awesome. I'm sure you will be happy with the pro.

I ran gas augers for years but always had issues with either bad tanks, hoses, dry rotted grommets what not. Switched to an auger ran by my dwalt drill, worked great the first 2 years but the batteries started not being able to punch enough holes, looking at new batteries/ new drill vs lithium auger I choose the later, figure we use it enough it's worth it

I have one but its not the 40 volt. 24 volt maybe. Its on its 3rd year and been great. 25 hole or more in single digit temps and 6 to 7 inches of ice. I think you will be happy.

NO GAS.. toss the auger in the bed the battery rides in the truck and/or UTV. Now if you’re riding around in 20+ temps my argument is moot but those ain’t my temps typically.
Any advice one gets should be factored against the area/region it comes from.. like I always say “don’t take cold weather advice from a Texan”.. grin

Gas augers are obsolete. Can't hardly give them away here.

Get good at charging the batteries when you get home and store them in the house.

Mostly dead then cold is a recipe for failure
As is storing them outside
Let them warm if before changing

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Been a few years since I went ice fishing but several times at Upper Red Lake I needed to put the extension on the 36 inch gas auger to get through the ice. How many 40 inch long holes can a battery drill when its below zero outside? And yes, the colder it is the harder the ice.

8 is all a guy needs. Especially if your a guy the walks and drags a sled. Less weight the better. You can easily get a 20 lb pike through an 8" hole. No need for anything bigger
