Dampening the media with mineral spirits cleans the grease out of the fur.
The mineral spirits dissolves/loosend the grease, and the media removes it and polishes the hair. The media, either cob grit or hardwood sawdust needs to be changed occasionlly because it will continue to accumulate the grease and dirt. The frequency will depend on how many pelts you run thru and how dirty the skins are that go in.If the pelts are washed before boarding and drying then the media in the drum should last a long time since it will be mostly just polishing fur.You can re use the old media in the fur shed when scraping fatty pelts.
It is also done with tanned fur to remove tanning oils etc from the fur.
And like pawnee said the water is to nullify static electricity in the drum.

I thought I’d see if anyone picked it out but they didn’t. I wanted to show the difference between a normal boated coyote and one put up on a dolphin nose board. Look at the difference between the second coyote from the left and the others. There is a drastic difference in how the dolphin board makes there neck pop.

Everything the left touches it destroys

Grounding strap my man. Tie a wire to a green ground wire from an outlet and run it over to your tumbler and have a couple coat hangers or something dragging on the outside of the thing when its spinning.

Just saw its wood. It needs a layer of chicken wire on the inside and outside (they have to be connected together well in more than one spot ideally) for it to work or something like that probably. Good luck to you my friend.

Posted above about why I ad paint thinner. The 2 cups of water are general anti static electricity measures!!! Static and paint thinner in a closed container are against fur shed safety protocols smile

Betsy does a great job. Finished fur looks great.

My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".
