My process is dig a hole somewhere deep and fish near the bottom. Locally there's only Trout and Char to catch with ice fishing. There's only one or two spots that might have grayling or whitefish, but I haven't gotten a chance to try them out yet.

Brookies & Rainbows ...pound the shore line with tip ups with smelt for bait.

#6 gold hook ... 3 feet of water or less.

Lakers ...40 45 feet or more of water....2 feet of the bottom

Same bait as above...or jig with a buck tail / tipped with a piece of sucker for bait

Like Bruce said ...Salmon ..right undah the ice.

But here in NH ..we can not take salmon through the ice.

We have to keep it in the hole...and just cut the line

Chasing walleyes.. Call my buddies that fish way more than I do...

And to add to that ensure after I go to tell them how I did, where I did it, and the ways in which I tried. Whether they ask for the info or not. Seems to keep them more not holding back with info to me..

can make as many holes as you want ,but 3 lines is all we can have all year round.

if you are running a high low rig with hooks at different depths that is 2 lines

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Go to Google Earth and look at the lake from overhead with open water. Most of the time you can make out points and basins. Pin the areas that look interesting.

Water clarity, seems important to when to fish for me. Clear water is usually better fishing low light, when the fish move shallower and seem to be more active. More so for walleye. Some stained or off colored lakes I have did well allday even walleyes, keep the noise down, sometimes I've had flags when drilling a hole, but more when quite. Even a few feet depth difference can channel or hold fish and around or on Humps

Talk to the owner of where you buy your bait. They want to make sure you have a good time and can give you some guidance to local water.

I like Polar tipups because they are light weight and have several nice features.
