Cool. What are they made of? Almost looks like terracotta, but I'd think they would all be broken.

That’s cool. I’m guessing the flat part on bottom is weighted to help the trap land “on its feet” when dropped in the water.

Exactly, stabilizes it on the bottom, plus its a place for ballast inside.

Why did the longline idea not pan out? Lack of octopus? Lack of market?

Post some pictures if you have any. Love seeing sea life, worst part about MN is that it's about as far from saltwater as one can get

They make small barrels, with locking lids and a rubber gasket, to ship pharmaceuticals in. Those look somewhat similar. I bet the small barrels would work .we use them to store single bags of feed, once opened.

OH YES! I thought I had the new world record halibut on a line , but it was a very large octopus hanging onto something that was on the bottom. The deck crew grabbed him to chop up for Halibut bait faster than I could say Sashimi! They are pretty tasty!! The Captain said that was the biggest one he had seen in 24 years of fishing around Seward, he guessed it at 75+ lbs. Google states that the Pacific octopus can reach 110 lbs.
