I’ll do my best to lay out the situation. I have permission to trap a pond while running traps with my 7 and 4 year old I hear gunshots witch were obviously not a shot gun. We were on the levee that runs north south. The only houses near by have a fence that runs north south so I assumed they were shooting in our direction.I shot into the ground to hopefully let the people shooting know that we were back there. Then we ran back to the headland. Never heard the wiz of a bullet but it got me fired up. When I went to the guys house I told him to watch for my truck at the end of a dead end road and if it was there not to shoot in our direction. It’s a tough situation because we have boats and traps back there so I don’t need to make someone mad and wind up with thousands lost for the land owner if the shooter gets mad and wants to wreck the pond. How would you handle it. Should I have called the sheriff or left it alone all together

Also I did see them shooting in the exact direction we were walking I’m assuming the levee to the pond in front of ours was catching the bullets and the guy said himself he knew I go back there everyday but said he didn’t see my truck

Move along, it’s not worth the risk or drama.

I wouldn’t trap the pond if idiots are shooting in my direction and I wouldn’t take my kids any longer if I did decide to keep trapping

Just get his number and text him when u get there and leave if ur worried.. considering you considered calling the Sheriff when you had no idea if he was shooting anywhere close to you while u were actually there it could maybe look like your over reacting a bit.

Go it alone for awhile at that spot and see if your talk with him changed things.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

As long as you didn't make a jerk of yourself, and the guy wasn't a jerk when you talked to him, I wouldn't even think about it any more. Sounds like they didn't know you were back there and they were being safe with a good backstop for where they were shooting. Honestly I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it when I first heard the gunshots. Now if you were a jerk when you confronted him, or he was a belligerent SOB, I would get my traps pulled before someone else does it for you (particularly if he knows that is what you are doing back there).

I considered calling the sherif after I saw that he was shooting in our direction. That’s the reason I didn’t call I couldn’t say for sure that he was shooting in our direction until I saw him doing it.

How much of a back stop did he have. Even at that no law was broken i believe so why call sheriff if a law wasn't broken. Now if he knew you where their and was shooting without a proper back stop in ur direction then it would be a different story.

The interaction seemed good I just told him if he saw my truck it meant we were walking the levees I told him I like guns as much as everyone else and that I wasn’t there to cause issues or get anyone in trouble but just wanted him to know if my truck was on the road that I was back there we shook hands and everything seemed good. Also I commercial crawfish the pond so it’s not as easy as pulling traps and leaving. All my crawfish traps run north and south so I’m still at risk when I’m doing my job

The levee is maybe three feet and the target was about two feet off the ground. He was also teaching someone how to shoot so very possible for a new shooter to aim high. They have about ten feet of backyard then it goes to my land owners property so they would define you get fined for shooting to close to a house. These aren’t big lots where someone was shooting on there property and I’m being a Karen he has less than 1/4 acre and was shooting onto my land owners property

Honk the horn and make sure he sees you’re there hen going to check traps. Sounds like you had a good interaction so hopefully the problem resolves itself

You talked to him. He seemed to take it well. There's no reason to worry about it at this point. It won't do anything but make you miserable. Unless he's a complete psycho, he doesn't want to risk the fines and jail time from accidentally shooting someone.

I do like Yes Sirs idea to get his number, so that you can text him when you're back there.

Keith
