And another coyote.
My son invited me out to his place to do some calling. First stand has a group or pair answer us from a long ways away, but less than 10min into the calling sequence we had a coyote running in. Not exactly sure what happened, but he veered at the last minute with no shot. I stopped the caller and went silent for a few minutes then went back with my favorite distress call and he poked his head up trying to circle downwind of us. I told my son and he whispered “unsafe” and for me to take him when I could. I’d already dropped the scanner and was on the rifle as backup and touched the trigger.
A nice 34# male.

Stand #2 produced a blank.

Stand #3.1 was met with Miranda Lambert being blasted by “mudders” as my son calls them so we relocated to the opposite side of the pecan orchard for stand #3.2. About 8 minutes in we got some riled up, but knew they weren’t coming due to the terrain. We marked their location on the map and decided we’d give them a try another night when the wind was in our favor.

A pretty good night in my opinion. I’m also testing some new bullets and think I’m gonna love them! They’re the Nosler Varmageddon’s 110gr! They’d dropped the hog with ease and we had to hunt for the entrance on this coyote with no exit. I’m used to walking up and seeing a massacre wondering how I’m gonna pose it for a pic with the 168gr CoreLokts, lol. It may be in my head, but I notice less recoil and they definitely seem quieter.

How do you spot them? Infrared? Or just moonlight?

IRay Bolt TH50 C 640 on the rifle shown and an AGM Rattler TS35 640 on the SFAR. I use an AGM Taipan V2 19-384 as a scanner.
Thermals are an addiction.

Sadly can't use any here in Alaska for hunting or trapping. Wish I could. My 9-5 uses up basically all the daylight hours we have.

Our thermal season starts Feb 1. Didn’t even go last year. I have a couple yipping behind the house a couple times a week that are going to be in for a surprise in a week or so,

I’m glad we don’t have a season, lol. I guess y’all got worse rednecks than we do! I’m guessing it’s because of deer season? And are you in one of those states that’s not allowed to shoot a hog unless you own the land?
