If China had been permitted to build the bridges on both ends of the canal, as they planned to, they could easily of blown them up in the future and blocked 40% of our container ship traffic and 62% of our East/West Coast shipping. NW passage would help with that. For those that don't know, interesting story about the NW passage and Resolute desk that sits in the oval office. What a that was. I don't agree that we are 100% responsible for it if that's what you're suggesting, but its happening. Read the link I posted about the passage. There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.
